"I loved this book, even with the narrator's slightly homely references to the illustrations, which, by the way, end up adding to the story, immeasurably. The real main character is New York City, in both 1882 and 1970. I had just read Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted by Justin Martin, and Central Park, my "new best friend" was prevalent in Jack Finney's tale. As always, with books that effect me deeply, this one expanded my thinking, in this case, my notions of the nature of time."

" Loved this book. In general, I love time travel books. But this one has really cool old photos of NYC and the story is captivating as well. I like the sequel as well. "

" The only reason I picked up this book was because Stephen King has recemmonded this book in the epilogue of his book 11/22/63. To be honest, I haven't actually finished reading this book, I barely made it to around 50% of the book to try and make sense of what was happening but failed. For starters I was hoping that there was some time machine that was transporting the protagonist through time, only later realizing to my dismay that all of it was through hypnotic suggestions. The thing that I found very irritating was that there is no clear indication as to the exact moment when Simon moves from the present to the past in the year 1882. The first 25% of the book was the meaningless conversation between Simon and Rube that didn't mention anything about time travel and that only added to my irritation. The one thing that made me give it 2 stars instead of 1 was because the author (or rather the protagonist, Simon) had added pictures of the time he spent in the year 1882. This is not a book I would recommend to anyone. "

" reread this as i have a new library deliverer who is not so good-my 20 books are ready to be returned-10 days ago-and my new ones haven't arrived.but this is an oldie but goodie and it swept me back to New York in the 1880's-lovely "

" I only recommend this book if you think you would enjoy reading historical descriptions of NYC in 1882. The story itself was only so-so - I didn't really care that much about the main characters or what happened to them, but I did love the descriptive snapshots of NYC as it was in 1882. "

" Loved this book the first time I read it in the 70s. Recently retread it and realized it is pretty sexist, the female character is doing everything the male does, but gets no credit. "

" I used to love, love, love this book, rereading it every few years or so. But the last time, it finally seemed more dated than ever and not in a good way. I no longer think they should make a movie out of it, even though, with CGI, it would now be possible. "

" I'll admit that I got a little bogged down by all of the description in this book. However, by the end I really enjoyed the book. It was written in the 70's and deals with time travel. I too enjoyed the rules of time travel and really liked the characters. "
