Trudy, a college history professor, is collecting oral histories from World War II survivors (both German and Jewish). Her mother, Anna, refuses to talk to her, but Anna's story is revealed in flashback. She conducted an affair with a Jewish baker who was summarily killed. Afterward, Anna caught the eye of a high-ranking Nazi officer. She was coerced into an abusive affair with him, which she went along with in order to ensure her survival - and that of her baby. " Yep. I know people like this, who choose to never speak about things which are terrible, haunting, or even just merely uncomfortable, rather than just "poop it all out on the table" as my friend likes to say. What a burden. Wow. "

" The Depravity of Man, as seen in the microcosm of one young German woman's survival through the dark days of WWII. It is impossible for me to judge the choices of one who had no power over her life and her child's life during that period of time, nor do I insist she 'unburden' herself by confessing all the ugliness to her daughter later. I was left feeling that something else should happen, although I cannot think of what. I really liked the style of conversation without quotations. I will be thinking about this one for a long time, which is a sign of a good read! "

" Tough material. And I thought I'd read enough Holocaust/WWII novels and memoirs to not be surprised anymore. I loved how the author took us back and forth from the past and the present in two different voices, and didn't tie it up too neatly in the end. "

" Very well written, but a difficult story to read for me because of the graphic content. I had to put the book down several times to read something else that was not so depressing. I just can't understand how people can get to this level of pure evil. I wasn't as satisfied with the ending as I would have liked, but then I guess I couldn't expect such an emotionally complicated story to be wrapped up with a fairytale ending. "
