Two time-traveling agents from warring futures, working their way through the past, begin to exchange letters—and fall in love in this thrilling and romantic book from award-winning authors Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone.
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.
Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.
Except the discovery of their bond would mean death for each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win that war. That’s how war works. Right?
Cowritten by two beloved and award-winning sci-fi writers, This Is How You Lose the Time War is an epic love story spanning time and space.

"This Is How You Lose the Time War is rich and strange, a romantic tour through all of time and the multiverse, and you shouldn’t miss a moment.”
— Martha Wells, Hugo Award–winning author
“Poetry, disguised as genre fiction. I read several sections out loud—this is prose that wants to be more than read. It wants to be heard and tasted.”
— Kelly Sue DeConnick, author of Bitch Planet and Captain Marvel" You might enjoy this if you enjoy rivals-to-lovers, hurt/comfort, and epistolary tropes. Also, if you enjoy stories where very little is explained, and you have to let your imagination fill in the gaps. You might NOT enjoy this if you don't enjoy Byzantine/opaque prose, or nonlinear narratives, or deus ex machina. There's a parallel world where this story is 2x-3x longer, is a rom-com, and has been optioned for a Netflix miniseries starring Emily Blunt (as Red) and Amber Midthunder (as Blue). In this parallel version of the story, the exact same story beats are hit, and the exact same character arcs are made, but the prose is approachable by a mainstream audience. Sadly, we are not in the parallel world, but in one where the authors decided to try being clever. YMMV. "
