Friends since earliest childhood, Annie, Jake, and Mason have a special bond. When Annie's parents die on the same night that she and Mason get married, the three friends decide to raise Annie's infant sister, Opal, together. "This is the first book that I've read in a long time that I hated to put down. I read it in 2 days. Ursula Hegi, my favorite author, didn't disappoint me. I found something redemptive and likable in each of the characters of this book."

— Fergie (4 out of 5 stars)

Quotes

  • “The Worst Thing I've Done is the work of a mature and masterful writer at her peak. The layering—the collage—of character and point of view, tragedy and healing, creativity and loss, loyalty and fidelity, love and jealousy, all combine with lyrical prose in a story that resonates long after its end.”

    — The Washington Post
  • “Hegi is an accomplished storyteller; she inhabits different characters and blends the past with the present to tell a rich story of love, death, loyalty, and survival.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “This ambitious novel fearlessly explores both the highs and lows of pushing emotional boundaries.”

    — Booklist

" The author tried to tell the same story through the eyes of three different characters and it just jumps around too much to follow sometimes. I also thought the heavy handed political commentary didn't add anything at all to the story. I kept reading, hoping the story would come together, but I got to the end and felt like I wasted my time. "

" If you are a conservative person you probably do a lot of reading, and not always "conservative" type books. However, this book turned me off because the author felt it necessary to plug her hatred of politically conservative-type people, and especially her hatred of George Bush, the Iraq war, etc. If you are a writer, you really are doomed if you plug your politics with your novels. In short, it makes them SUCK. "
