"In this story if you have read another one of David Baldacci's books, he goes into a slightly larger realm when he includes most of the world in this amazing book. Shaw, the main character is working to repay his debt to a government official when he gets engaged to Anna Fischer. Shaw is looking to retire when things take a turn for the worse and Shaw has to re think his plans. Katie James is a reporter who has run into problems with alcohol and now is in a new low for a reporter and is desperately looking for a story that will bring her back to the top. Katie is roaming a town when a man (Shaw) catches her eye and she decided to follow him leading her into the story of her lifetime. Now Katie, Shaw, and Frank (Shaw's boss) must find out who is behind the London Massacre and the imposing World War III. Shaw, Frank, Anna, and Katie create a phenomenal story that you cannot put down. This book has so many twists and turns that when you think you have it figured out how they are going to get the 'bad guy' the next chapter changes your thoughts. This book is a must read especially because of the great writing style and topics of David Baldacci"
— Stuart (4 out of 5 stars)
“Baldacci delivers twists and turns, characters, and quick pacing in this thriller with a global backdrop.”
— Boomer Magazine“Ron McLarty’s gruff voice enhances this fast-moving thriller as he takes the listener through barrages of deadly assaults featuring gunfire, knives, bombs, and hacksaws. He portrays Shaw, the unwilling secret agent, as weary yet tough. Nicolas Creel, who needs a good war to help sagging profits, comes across as appropriately cerebral and coldhearted...The sound track is comparable to a terrific cinematic score: darkly foreboding or quietly romantic when appropriate, raising this audio to an art form and enhancing the already gripping tale.”
— Publishers Weekly (audio review)“Ron McLarty’s excellent reading captures the excitement and suspense of Baldacci’s story and allows the listener to hear the unique personalities of each character. Highly recommended for all public libraries.”
— Library Journal (audio review)When Baldacci is on fire, nobody can touch him.
— Booklist (starred review)High-stakes action, shadowy government agencies, and [a] neo-Cold War backdrop . . . Baldacci pushes his plot ahead at such a blistering pace.
— Washington PostDelicious . . . [a] roller-coaster adventure . . . an utterly enjoyable escapist page-turner.
— Tampa TribuneBaldacci boldly steps into the arena of international thriller and may have created his most explosive and hard-hitting story to date.
— BookReporter.com" This book as pretty predictable, but I still liked the story. There is a lot of action and would probably make a good movie. "
— Tanna, 2/13/2014" This is readable, although the characters are wooden and lifeless, and if you have anything more than a tourist's knowledge of London, Edinburgh and Paris, Baldacci's descriptions of those places will make you cringe! "
— Julia, 2/12/2014" The main character A Shaw is kind of cross between Mitch Rapp and Jack Reacher. "
— Craig, 2/4/2014" The second half of this novel is by far more exciting and interesting. Therefore, 9 of 10 stars. "
— Tim, 1/27/2014" Classic Baldacci thriller. There are no real surprises in this type of story but the journey to the end is fun. When the super-villain goes to his mega-yacht you know the final battle will take place there. When they talk about the attached submarine you know that will feature in final part of the story. It took me until about 3/4 of the way through the story to figure out who the "I thought he was my ally but he turns out to be my enemy" was. You know with this type of book the good guy will win in the end, the villain will get his come-upance, and the world will once again be made safe. "
— Tania, 1/23/2014" This book has violence, sex, and swearing. The premise is that a person who sells weapons wants more business so he starts a war through videos on the internet. Interesting, not bad after the first 4-5 chapters. "
— Jessie, 1/22/2014" What a great way to spoil a good book. He starts out strong, with an interesting idea full of relevant concepts expressed in compelling language, then completely ruined it for me by making me no longer care at all what happened to the characters about the time I was halfway through. "
— Heather, 1/8/2014" Finished this while stuck in LaGuardia and on all the planes between NYC and Boise. Fun and entertaining but definitely skippable. "
— Brian, 1/8/2014" I couldn't put it down! I loved it! It is exciting and fast paced. "
— Mary, 12/23/2013" I read Shaw #2 prior to #1 and both were good; however, liked #2 better. David does a great job and I especially like his audio books. Look forward to reading more! "
— Judy, 12/17/2013" I quit reading about 1/4 through the book. The plot was really weak. Not a typical Baldacci, that's for sure. "
— Shu, 12/7/2013" Author gives lots of background in beginning chapters. I had read a Katie James/Shaw book before so it was great to read the 1st one. "
— Sheri, 12/1/2013" It was a good paperback, intended for paperback reading. I felt the characters were not well developed and leaned too heavily on cultural cliches. Still, it brightened my time in Brazil and the plot wasn't bad. "
— Byron, 3/11/2013" Typically good Baldacci read. An interesting take on 'perception management'. I wonder how much of this actually happens. "
— Lou, 10/13/2012" It was OK. Just didn't enjoy the subject. "
— Cris, 8/12/2012" Awesome book. I would give it six stars if I could. The best book by Baldacci that I've read so far. More twists and surprises, and there are several points in the book that almost had me yelling out loud at the characters as if they were in a movie on a big screen. Definitely worth a read. "
— MepoInc, 8/10/2011" Good book of intrigue and action and scary what can happen when evil men put their mind to it. "
— TeriC, 1/15/2011" The last of my beach reads from my Indonesian trip. I think anyone should read this book and not just at the beach. It gives you so much to think about regarding the nature of war, the news today and what you can believe about both.... which is exactly nothing. "
— Mona, 9/15/2010" another book that points out (even through fiction) that the truth is not always the truth and you can't believe everything you hear "
— Lil, 8/16/2010" Is this my eleventh Baldacci book, I think? Sigh. So nice that I have more to read. "
— Richard, 3/21/2010" The whole idea of perception management in this time of internet is probably more realistic than some of can even imagine! It does drive home the need to NOT BE A SHEEP people! Check things out and be sure that you are holding those in charge responsible. "
— Amanda, 12/2/2009" The most appalling massacre takes place on a quiet London street in a power play. Perception management is fully employed by a private company to manipulate the truth. It makes you wonder if there is anything that can be reliably believed. "
— Pauline, 10/19/2009" A good story, but the premise is a little silly and the escapes a bit contrived. Still I enjoyed it and may actually read another book by this author. An easy read "
— Vincent, 7/5/2009" The usual David Baldacci style...good v evil!! A good read with some previous characters. Action packed at the end...a little bit unrealistic but who cares?? "
— Sue, 6/27/2009" This was a great book. The idea of governments possible setting up a situation and influencing the media to alter our beliefs is frightening and I believe it has happened. I couldn't put it down. "
