The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence - unless, somehow, they can learn a new life. "Got this on Kindle as we were touring the Intracoastal Waterway from Jacksonville, FL, to Charleston, SC. A memoir of Conroy's one year teaching experience on Daefuskey Island, SC, at a two-room school of all Negro children, where he taught grades 4 - 8. " — Joan (5 out of 5 stars)

" Useful. Nice not to hae to carry a dozen different books on the trip. "
" This book is a MUST for any one in the education field. "
" This is the book on which the movie "Conrack" was based. A wonderful, heartwarming story, and I believe semi-autobiographical. "
" (4-4.5) I loved the writing, it was so funny and real :) I fell in love with all the characters and the whole story. "
" A "must" for any Pat Conroy fan. For those of us in the Pat Conroy fan club, it is fun to go back to his earlier books and compare the developments in his writing from then to now. But, as always, a wonderfully told story. "
" A great true story. Very inspiring! "
" Anyone who wants to be a teacher or who is or has been a teacher should read this book. "
" Entertaining yet not sugar coated to the reality of the life that was lived on this island and the politics that fought against implementing positive change. We are luck to have good, visionary teachers. Great book. "
" Yet again, I need more stars to rate this title. "
