A heartbreaking affair, an unsolved murder, an explosive romance: welcome to summer on the Cape in this powerful debut.Seven summers ago, Marcella Atkinson fell in love with Cecil McClatchey, a married father of two. But on the same night their romance abruptly ended, Cecil's wife was found murdered—and their lives changed forever. The case was never solved, and Cecil died soon after, an uncharged suspect. Now divorced and estranged from her only daughter, Marcella lives alone, mired in grief and guilt. Meanwhile, Cecil's grown son, Jed, returns to the Cape with his sister for the first time in years. One day he finds a woman's bathing suit buried in a closet—a relic, unbeknownst to him, of his father's affair—and, on a hunch, confronts Marcella. When they fall into an affair of their own, their passion temporarily masks the pain of the past, but also leads to crises and revelations they never could have imagined. In what is sure to be the debut of the season, The Swimming Pool delivers a sensuous narrative of such force and depth that you won't be able to put it down.

"this book has it all, murder, infedelity, cougars, suicide, etc...a bit whiny though. all in all, took me 3 days to read (while i kept the other eye on the canucks and bruins...)."
— Jennifer (4 out of 5 stars)
" Seven years after her lover dies in an accident, Marcella begins a heated affair with his 27 year old son. The story line is good, but the editing time line mistakes are annoying. "
— Katherine, 2/19/2014" This was one that took forever to get in to. I diod not connect with the characters and found Marchella an unsympathetic character of very low morals; Jed was constantly in competition with his deceased father; and the Marchella-Jed relationship turned my stomach. The end was unsatisfying as there was no closure. "
— Misskat922, 2/17/2014" boring book - wish I didnt feel like I had to finished it since I started it. Dont waste your time with this one.... "
— Sarah, 2/15/2014" It was pretty good. I think I heard about it from some magazine's book club. "
— Angela, 1/28/2014" The Swimming Pool was an okay book, but was underdeveloped, and difficult to connect to. The story never really reels you in, excited for more. Marcella, the protagonist, is a depressing, self-loathing, over emotional, selfish, immoral woman, making it very difficult to like her, want her to come out winning in the end. The problem in the story is also unclear, is it the murder, the messed up relationships? Then the resolution to the "problem" is very quick, and lack luster. It could be considered a mystery, but there are not the little clues that lead you along the way, making you wonder how the mystery is solved. Because the morals of the characters are so skewed, sick really, you want them to do the right thing, and they never do. There are layers of infertility, infidelity, lack of self esteem, and postpartum, but none of which go deep enough to really get into. Not a terrible read, but not one that I would recommend to anyone. "
— Andrea, 1/21/2014" An unsolved murder still affects the lives of the inhabitants of a summer community on Cape Cod years later. The story had potential, but the narrative was too convoluted and the characters seemed remote, so I didn't really care about any of them. "
— Linda, 1/17/2014" Dark psychological drama that deals with the aftershock of a murder on the family and friends of the victim. Very compelling. Hooked me from page 1. "
— Diane, 12/27/2013" Great prose but a strange story and ending "
— Sharon, 12/6/2013" okay -- not great but not terrible "
— Cameron, 11/19/2013" The book lacked...something. The build-up in the story was slow and the punch was a letdown. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone "
— Miss, 10/21/2013" I had a bit of a hard time getting into this book. A little slow going at first. However, by the end I was pulled in. All in all a pretty good book but not one I will re-read. "
— Karen, 6/24/2013" Twisted, sordid love affair where everybody gets hurt and no happy ending is to be seen anywhere in sight. "
— Beth, 1/7/2013" Good, not great. A bit more layered than I originally thought at times. "
— Kathy, 11/26/2011" intense story about multiple generations of love, betrayal and heartbreak, all set around a new england beach community. "
— Cathy, 11/19/2011" This was the perfect beach read - intrigue, sex and it is all set around a beach community. I read this on vacation and, while it wasn't as good as I hoped, it was perfect for vacation. "
— Kate, 8/4/2011" Murder, mystery, family drama, steamy sex scenes... this book has it all! "
— Maureen, 7/2/2011" an affair, a dead wife, the memory of a dead lover, a distant ex, a depressed mother, a petulant daughter, and a sexy son - all part of the mix in this fairly standard novel of women's fiction. "
— marin, 5/1/2011" disturbing and dark, could not get to like the characters. "
