Publisher Description

For years, cardiologist Arthur Agatston, M.D. urged his patients to lose weight for the sake of their hearts, but every diet was too hard to follow or its restrictions were too harsh. Some were downright dangerous. Nobody seemed to be able to stick with low-fat regimens for any length of time. And a diet is useless if you can't stick with it.

So Dr. Agatston developed his own. The South Beach Diet isn't complicated, and it doesn't require that you go hungry. You'll enjoy normal-size helpings of meat, poultry, and fish. You'll also eat eggs, cheese, nuts, and vegetables. Snacks are required. You'll learn to avoid the bad carbs, like white flour, white sugar, and baked potatoes. Best of all, you'll lose that stubborn belly fat first!

Dr. Agatston's diet has produced consistently dramatic results (8 to 13 pounds lost in the first two weeks!) and has become a media sensation in South Florida. Now you, too, can join the ranks of the fit and fabulous with The South Beach Diet.

"Really good but made obsolete by the Supercharged edition that came out 5 years later. I bought both books at the same time b/c I didn't know the difference, which I then found out is that Supercharged is a 2nd edition of sorts. I read this one first after the diet was recommended by my doctor, and it got me started - it's an easy read that really explains how sugar can affect you, enough that it really motivated me to follow the diet and stay away from the sweets! I'm still in the process of making some of the recipes - have certainly not tried them all - but some are amazingly simple and delicious, like the ricotta creme dessert! It is literally ricotta cheese w/a little flavor and it's amazing! I'm sure this diet isn't for everyone - it's certainly about personal fit - but it spoke to me and my individual issues (like blood sugar spikes and drops, and becoming starving and irritable), and for me hearing about WHY eating healthy works worked for me! I've lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks and still motivated!"

" While I am not a fan of the South Beach diet, due to my love of sugar, this book is an excellent read for sugar monsters like myself. The book encourages eating plenty of lean meats, vegetables and nuts. It discourages diets filled with sugar and an overabundance of carbohydrates...and provides reasoning into why you need to avoid a plethora of these bloating belly foods. This was an easy read for anyone interested in healthy eating. "

" I am a 45-year-old chubby girl and I need to lose weight. My friend Kim introduced me to South Beach, and this is a diet I am excited about. After the initial 2-week "Phase One" where carbs and sugars are off-limits (kinda torturous), the "Phase Two" weight-loss portion of the diet is an eating plan that I think I can stick to. In my opinion it mirrors the Word of Wisdom fairly well: meat in moderation, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, etc. I am about five days into Phase One currently, and although I might kill for a piece of bread, it's really going rather well and I feel good. Avocados are a gift from God and I love them, and they are allowed! It's a good thing. Wish me luck! "

" This book was great. It was very informative and full of easy to understand facts about how the body processes the food we eat. It makes me mindful of how what I eat will effect me. I may be able to actually make a lifestyle change because of this book. How great is that? Read it. "

" Although I hated the diet (I was light-headed from the lack of carbs), there is a lot of stuff in the book that makes sense. Although I don't follow the diet anymore, it did help me change my eating. I try to eat only good fats and good carbs. "
