Publisher Description

The deepest currents of passion seldom break the surface of literature. Romantic classics abound; but however skilled a writer may be in verbalising an emotional experience, he cannot publicly evoke the heat of blood, the yearning of soul, bared in perfect intimacy between two beings. But letters can do this, and songs never meant to be sung by any but the lover, or the beloved. Greatest amongst these is the Song of Songs, set to no known music, and for no religious reason incorporated into the Old Testament. Historically, this Song of Solomon is thought to be an ancient wedding idyll, transmitted to us in a rather fragmentary form.

"I loved these books; George R R Martin is hands down my favorite sci-fi writer. I won't try to review these separately since a tore through them all one after the other and would struggle to separate back out which plot elements developed in which books. Martin creates an entire world filled with interests and intrigues. He's willing to break with certain norms of fiction writing (there's no guarantee that your favorite character won't get killed off), and the way the different threads of the story fit together is delightful. Plus I took a personal interest in many of the characters, so it was near impossible to put these books down. The only bad part was that the series isn't finished yet, so I now have to wait for the next installment...."

" Really difficult to get through. I normall read a book this size in 1-2 weeks, but each one of these books took over a month. Was it worth it? Yes, mostly because I needed to know how the story ended and couldn't wait for the TV show, but like The Lord of the Rings I will never pick up these books again. "

" I've read the first 3 books in this series. He is an interesting author and has quite an imagination. It can be pretty gloom at times, however. The books are LONG, but he keeps you interested. "

" Read the first book. Could not put it down. This has not been happening to me lately. Really got involved with the characters, and can deeply feel everything that is happening to them. Unlike the Jack Vance fantasy trilogy I was reading, this has complexity and surprises. "

" One of less than ten books I've ever read a second time. Terrific gritty detail. Lots of blood and gore. But hey, if no one's being blown up or cut in half there's no point in my wasting my time. Can't recommend these highly enough. Just don't get too attached to every one of the characters. "

" I finished all of these shortly after the show premiered, like so many others. Martin's writing style is, at times, difficult for me to swallow. I like a good dose of poetry in my prose, but he has always kept me interested with his characters and a fine-tuned mastery of a sprawling world. "
