Publisher Description

A fast-paced and exciting read for middle grade fantasy, mystery, and animal buffs. Something strange is happening at the Clarksville City Zoo. Late at night, monkeys are scaling the walls and searching the neighborhood—but what are they looking for?

Noah, his sister Megan, and their best friends, Richie and Ella, live next door to the zoo. Megan is the first to notice the puzzling behavior of some of the animals. One day Megan disappears, and her brother and their friends realize it's up to them to find her. Their only choice is to follow a series of clues and sneak into the zoo. But once inside, they discover there's much more to the Clarksville City Zoo than they could ever have guessed...

The author originally had the idea for The Secret Zoo when he was nine and wondered what would happen if zoo exhibits had secret doors that allowed kids to go inside—and the animals to come outside. He brings that sense of adventure and excitement to this story, making it a favorite for home and classroom reading along with such middle grade fantasy favorites as The One and Only Ivan.

"This book really captured the imagination of my 8 and almost 6 year old boys. They would beg and beg for just one more chapter each night. I read the bio on the author to my 8 year old who would like to be an author himself one day. Bryan Chick came up with the idea for this book when he was only 9 and my son just loved that. The biggest flaw with the book is that you don't get to know a lot about the main characters, but there is plenty of action and adventure to make up for it. We'll be getting the second book in this series."

" Oh my gosh I thought that this book was amazing!!!!!! I read it in 4 days and the chapters are short so you can read them quickly. The only thing I didn't like was that there were a lot of unanswered questions and so I hope they are answered in the next book. This is a fast paced book and almost never a dull moment. I would recommend this book to anyone it is a great Read!!!!!! "

" This is a great book! I don't noramlly read kids books, but this one caught my eye one day at work and I just had to check it out! Although the book is definitely a quick read for tenns and adults, it is very well written and well thought out. The beginning was wonderfully mysterious and suspenseful; it gave me shivers reading it. I also like how Bryan Chick starts out giving you a very tiny hint and then starts the actual story from a point a month later. All the characters were delightful and I was very pleased that the animals were intelligent, but not overly anthropomorphic. I would recommend it for kids who love adventure and mystery as well as for adults who don't mind picking up a kids book once in a while. I can't wait to read the next one. "
