James was the guy no one noticed—another fifteen-year-old living in a small town. So when he gets into the American Science and Mathematics Academy (or ASMA), a public boarding school, James decides that it’s time to leave the past behind. In a student body made up of nerds and geeks, being cool is easy. All it takes is a few harmless lies to invent the new James: rebel, punk, street fighter. Everyone’s impressed—except for the beautiful Ellie Frost, whose icy demeanor holds an inexplicable attraction for James, and the mysterious ghost44, an IM presence who sees right through his new identity. But James is riding high—playing pranks and hooking up with the luscious Jessica Keen. Things seem perfect until he begins having strange dreams of a dark city haunted by demons. As the line between dreams and reality blurs, James comes to discover the secret—and consequence—of lying.

"The title to this book could give the impression of someone who lies constantly and gets into trouble with his parents or the police. Instead, this book tells the story of someone who makes up stories about his past in order to fit in at his new school as a slightly dangerous, but cool person. I thought it was very well-written, though I knew who the online ghost he talks to really was in person. It's a story that gave me some to think about and I enjoyed it thoroughly."

" It took a little while to get into, but once it grabbed me it never let go. "

— Kat, 11/20/2013" Good Character. Slow plot. Full of humor with a good look of how to become comfortable in your own skin. "
— Nance, 11/2/2013" Started off a lot better than it ended. The beginning was interesting and unique, but the ending was boring. "

— Rosmei, 8/30/2013" Ever want to reinvent yourself? James remade himself into the coolest, take-no-crap, prank-playing kinda teen he always dreamed of, until his real dreams seep into his waking life, and danger and destruction soon becomes too high a price for even the coolest guy. "
— Hollie, 2/11/2013" I just finished this book and loved it. I have passed "The Secret of Lying" to my 13-year old daughter and she is really enjoying it too. This book allowed me to talk to my daughter about some important topics and has really opened up our line of communication. "
— Seonah, 2/9/2013" An interesting concept is involved in this novel. It was well done, but moves at a slower pace (for my taste, this can be opposed). "
— May, 1/14/2013" Well-written novel yet confusing at time during dream sequences "
— Ocean, 10/25/2012" This is a wonderful book filled with all the angst, joy, and discovery that is apparent in really good coming-0f-age stories. It is honest and fearless, and leaves one just a little frightened for the main characters but also hopeful that they will each safely find a way to adulthood. "
— Conradlc, 4/24/2012" I liked it, yes, but it hasn't stuck with me the way most books do. I was drawn to the cover in the book store but ended it getting it from the library months later. "
— Kat, 4/13/2012" This was an interesting read. I'm not sure a male reader would go for this one, but it was an intriguing representation of the teenage male mind. "
— Maryalice, 3/13/2012" I actually stayed up to finish this, but I'm still not entirely sure how much I liked it... "
— Amber, 8/24/2011" Started off a lot better than it ended. The beginning was interesting and unique, but the ending was boring. "
