Under Platform 13 at Kings Cross Station there is a secret door that leads to a magical island.

It appears only once every nine years. And when it opens, four mysterious figures step into the streets of London. A wizard, an ogre, a fey, and a young hag have come to find the prince of their kingdom, stolen as a baby nine years before.

But the prince has become a horrible rich boy called Raymond Trottle who doesn't understand magic and is determined not to be rescued.

"I read this book every year as a read aloud to my 4th grade class. It was a great book to open up their imaginations, and also to help them try to make predictions based on the context clues given. It is a very fun book for all ages. One of my favorites."

" This was cute. Some very similar things to Harry Potter, though it was published before the Harry Potter series. A secret platform leading to another world in Kings Cross Station? A fat, spoiled boy antagonist with doting oblivious, horrible parents? An orphaned hero who lives in the same house in a windowless cupboard and is forced to do all the chores? Yeah...a lot of similarities. But there are some differences too. A quick, fun read. Boo to the fatphobia though. "

" I felt a little weird buying and reading this book, but I've decided to start picking up books for my big kid. I want to have books on his shelves that will encourage him to continue enjoying reading. I saw someone suggested this is for readers as young as second grade. My reader is in the middle of first grade and I am not sure he would read this on his own, even in 2nd grade. I am sure that he would like it read to him. The story was enjoyable and I think he will like it. "
