" slow and meandering and completely enveloping. it moves a little slow for YA, I'm wondering if it would keep my kids attention, but it's such a magical story and one that my memories will go back to time and time again. "

" Often engaging -- though the author's religious and philosophical bias (toward the powerful "magic" of thoughts over medicine, science, etc.) felt a little preachy at points. I admittedly felt unsettled by the image of children raising themselves (for the most part) and the odd, implicit suggestion that these children "knew better" than most adults, with the notable exception of a friend's mother. " I read this with my daughter, who has a hard time finding things she likes but she really enjoyed this story. It inspires the imagination having this secret garden, along with the huge house to explore and the strange crying sounds coming from down the hall. It has a gothic feel, I guess I would call it a gothic children's story. The intrigue of the voice coming from down the hall reminded me of Jane Eyre. "

" I loved this book. I'm not really sure why. K would never have bothered to pick it up on my own and only read it for my Children's Literature class. Now I am surprised that I didn't read it sooner because I really loved the film when I was little and am pleased to say that the book is even better. "
