Publisher Description

The late Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño has been called the García Marquez of his generation.

The Savage Detectives is a hilarious and sexy, meandering and melancholy, companionable and complicated road trip through Mexico City, Barcelona, Israel, Liberia, and finally the desert of northern Mexico. It is the first of Bolaño's two giant works, with 2666, to be translated into English and is already being hailed as a masterpiece.

"One of the best books I've read in a long time. Bolano, with his diversity and detailed descriptions and smooth, accessible language, is a genius author. The book veers way away from the main plot, if this book can be considered to have a plot at all, but it is ok, because everything in between that and its return to the plot is highly entertaining. A must read."

" Read this on the flight over from Brisbane to Perth. Is it wrong to have no idea what's happening yet love every single word on the page? Utter gorgeousness. "

" To read about a duel at a beach between a critic and a writer is worth every other sentence in this work. Informative?-not much: Transformative absolutely - art in its most enlightening rendering. "

" I must confess that this is not among the greatest books I have read; it is incredibly slow, lacking a clear narrative and told from a very male perspective. Still, it is like nothing else and inspired me to read 2666, which is the reason I give it an extra star above the 3 that it really deserved. "

" I just began this book and am enjoying every page. It's one of those books that takes you on a journey to another world. So smart and beautifully written. It's about a young Chilean poet coming of age in Mexico city. "

" If I hadn't read 2666, this would be have been it for Bolano. Some fairly nice passages but overall really quite dull. There were no insights here- we follow quasi-losers around as they do nothing special on several continents. "

" I hesitate to review a book that I haven't finished reading and won't finish. I just didn't like this at all. Maybe I am too old to read a book about self-indulgent young men or maybe I just didn't get the latin culture. I'd love to know what others thought of this book. "
