Romantic havoc ensues in the town of Bath when Sir Anthony arrives to arrange the marriage of his son Captain Jack Absolute to the wealthy Lydia Languish. Jack and Lydia are already in love, but because of Lydia’s obsession with romantic novels, Jack has disguised himself as a poor officer named Ensign Beverly—and he is only one of Lydia’s many suitors. The Rivals was Sheridan’s first play, and this charming comedy of manners continues to be widely performed today. Includes an interview with Linda Kelly, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and author of Richard Brinsley Sheridan: A Life.

This is an LA Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Lloyd Owen as Captain Jack Absolute, Lucy Davis as Lydia Languish, Rosalind Ayres as Mrs. Malaprop, Kenneth Danziger as Thomas, Neil Dickson as David, Sarah Drew as Julia, Julian Holloway as Sir Lucius O’Trigger, Christopher Neame as Sir Anthony Absolute, Moira Quirk as Lucy, Alan Shearman as Fag, Simon Templeman as Bob Acres, and Matthew Wolf as Faulkland. Directed by Martin Jarvis and recorded at the Invisible Studios, West Hollywood in 2010.

About the Author

Author Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) was a beloved Irish-born playwright of the eighteenth century. He left a career in law to pursue theater, and in less than a year had made a name for himself among contemporary dramatists. Though best-remembered as the author of brilliant comedies of manners, Sheridan was also a significant politician and orator, serving as secretary of foreign affairs, secretary to the treasury, treasurer of the navy, and a member of Parliament for thirty-two years.

About the Narrators

Moira Quirk, a British actress and Earphones Award–winning narrator, co-narrated Ben Bova’s Mercury and has narrated other popular audiobooks for which she received Audie Award nominations. She is a successful comedian and can be heard on Nickelodeon’s cartoon My Life as a Teenage Robot as well as in The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd, The Wild Thornberrys Feature, and Serendipity, among others. She has also lent her voice to several video games, including Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction and Haunting Ground.

Simon Templeman is a British actor who frequently voices vampire characters in video games, most notably Kain from the Legacy of Kain video game series.

Ken Danziger (a.k.a. Kenneth Scott) has been an actor almost longer than he can remember. He has enjoyed it all: training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England and stage, film, and television work in London, New York, and currently in Los Angeles. There have been many highlights along the way, not least among them working on this book.

Rosalind Ayres is a leading English actress whose many movies include the Oscar-winning Gods and Monsters and Titanic. Her audio performances have won awards in both Britain and the United States, including AudioFile Earphones Awards.

Neil Dickson is an actor and audiobook narrator who was a finalist for the prestigious Audie Award in 2011 for Best Audio Drama narration. His extensive acting roles in television and film include Sons of Liberty and the role of King Richard in Lionheart.

Sarah Drew is an American actress who has appeared on a number of television shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, Everwood, Castle, Supernatural, Mad Men, Law & Order: SVU, and Glee. She also works as a voice actor.

Matthew Wolf has worked extensively as a voice, theater, radio, and television actor. He has appeared in many productions on the London stage, including the title role in a sell-out production of Macbeth alongside Twilight star Robert Pattinson. He is also the official voice of Thor for Mavel Studios’ animated films Hulk Vs. Thor and Thor: Tales of Asgard. He lives in Los Angeles, where he is also producing with his production company, Cool Hand International.
