Israel Zangwill (1864–1926), was a noted Jewish spokesman, writer, and translator. Born in London, he went to school at Plymouth and Bristol but was mainly self-taught, graduated with honors from London University, and after teaching became a journalist. A leading Zionist, he wrote poems, plays, novels, and essays and became widely known by his Jewish tales of the ghetto, establishing his reputation with their sympathetically critical portrayal at a time when alien immigration was a burning issue.
