To the public, he’s a hero: a brutal killer who targets sex offenders. To most of London’s police force, he’s the suspect in a gruesome, time-consuming case to be avoided. But to Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan, he’s a murderer—no matter the sins of his victims—and catching him is her job. Assigned to the case with the division’s unreadable new DI, Josh Derwent, young and inexperienced Maeve is determined to prove she has what it takes to make it as a female in the tough world of the London police.
But for a killer who strikes with such spectacle, this one is proving remarkably elusive. And when Maeve learns his motive might be about exacting revenge, his acts of incredible violence move from abstract justice to the intensely personal, and become all the more terrifying. Unsure whom she can trust even within her own department and knowing that her life is at stake, Maeve will have to decide how far she’s willing to go to ensure justice is served.
Jane Casey’s taut, brilliantly executed thriller will have listeners on the edge of their seats from the opening chapter to the stunning conclusion.

"I was fortunate enough to be a first reader winner and I thoroughly enjoyed this crime novel. It gives you a inside look into police work and the plot was gripping and I could identify with the characters. It was a tension filled read that I could barely put down. Jane Casey has a new fan in me and I am looking forward to reading her other books in this series. I would definitely recommend this book."

" This is the first time that I have read a book by Casey. Definitely not for the faint of heart, this is a crime novel at its best. Non-stop action, police force and detectives pulled in many different directions. Told from the point of view of a young woman on the force, in London. She brings humor to a complicated and, at times, horrifying story. . "
— Harriet, 2/5/2014" Meh. Wasn't a great mystery. It kept escalating the last third of the book. It drove me nuts. I almost gave up when there was only 50 pages left. The voice shift was odd so close to the end of the book. Annoyed that I wasted my time. "
— Teresa, 1/17/2014" The primary story, while bloody and awful is pretty interesting. Dealing with pedophiles in a terminal manner gets very gory. The kidnnapping of the gangsters' daughter is also interesting. What is not so interesting is all the romance: will he, won't he, does he, does she? Kind of like Junior high. That is, until the end when Ms. Casey ties it all up. Very good ending, but torturous getting there. "
— Richard, 12/31/2013" Another great mystery writer to add to my list! I realized I accidentally started with the 3rd in the series though... "
— Alicia, 12/26/2013" I've chosen not to read this second book simply because the first was just OK, and the type font in the copy I have from the library of The Reckoning is too hard for my eyes to read. "
— Sheila, 12/25/2013" Took me a while to get going with this but once i did i enjoyed it. Have to say though that the two 'Rob' chapters seemed pointless. "
— Patsy, 12/18/2013" An excellent and suspenseful police procedural. Fans of Tana French should not miss Jane Casey. "
— Stephanie, 11/14/2013" Long book but always entertaing! Great twists and turns!!! "
— Ava, 11/14/2013" It started kind of slow but ended up being good. I have read The Burning but don't believe I have read The Missing. "
— Pam, 9/25/2013" Eh, not a fan. Not sure why -- but I vastly prefer Tana French as my go to Irish mystery author. Maybe this was too detailed and bizarre? Not enough heart, and the changing POV mid-way through the book was a distraction for me. "
— Wendela, 8/30/2013" I listened to this on audio book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was s good story and the characters were engaging. The only negative I have is that the main character was fancied by all the men in the book. I found that really annoying. "
— Cathy, 6/22/2013" It was OK... bit obvious and silly at the end though. Nice twist in the middle. "
— Fay, 4/22/2013" Firstly ignore the blurb on the covers - that doesn't reflect the nature of what is a gritty police procedural thriller of high quality. DC Maeve Kerrigan is a flawed but immensely likeable heroine who is dealing with a very nasty case..... "
— Simon, 2/4/2013" very good! I really liked the main characters and the romance aspect in this intriguing crime drama. "
— Ellen, 10/31/2012" I think the editor skipped the first 100 pages, but the after that the pacing really hits the mark and makes for an entertaining read. Casey has herself a terrific main character in Maeve Kerrigan. "
— Charlie, 9/25/2012" I liked it - need to go back and read the first two. Didn't realize it was a series until I started reading it. "
— Kristin, 8/26/2012" I like the character Maeve. I liked the fact that she isn't perfect. The idea of a serial killer targeting sex offenders is good. Should their deaths be given the same urgency as a non-sex offender? Who is responsible for the killings? This book kept me guessing. "
— Sara, 8/15/2012" Excellent, I loved it. Her best book yet. Likeable and well developed characters and a lovely, complex plot. "
