Ancient legend tells of an army of knights that will remain sleeping until the last days. The knights are waking up. A homeless man is stalked by a pale, wraithlike creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth. Maimed animals and a host of suicides cluster around a mountain in Scotland. And deep beneath the cobbled streets of Oxford, a malicious hoard besieges a hidden city. Freya Reynolds is a university student with a touch of OCD and an obsession with myth and folklore. Daniel Tully is living rough on the streets of Oxford, waging a secret war against an enemy only he can identify. Years ago, they found themselves in a world few know is real. They have since gone their separate ways and tried to put that adventure behind them. But the mythical world is now bleeding into our reality—a dark spiritual evil that is manifesting itself in forgotten corners of the British Isles. Alex Simpson is a Scottish police officer who specializes in hunting mythical creatures. Together, they must confront the past, the present, and points beyond to defeat the ultimate threat to humanity. Nothing they’ve seen so far prepares them for what awaits . . . in The Realms Thereunder.

"Good first effort from a new author. I have enjoyed much of his fathers writing, so I decided to give him a go and was pleased. Good character development and a story that moves along at a good entertaining pace. Be warned this is the first in a series of books, so this one will leave you hanging."

“[A] fantastically compelling novel mixing the best of fantasy, adventure, and intrigue.”
— C.J. Darlington, author of Bound by Guilt" I so wanted to love this book. However, the pace of the book lagged in several places. I wanted to form a relationship with Daniel and Freya, but the character development didn't draw me into their lives sufficiently to really care about them and their adventures. Likewise with the characters they encounter throughout the book. I never found myself invested in the plot. That said, I see enough in Ross Lawhead's first book to be encouraged that his sequels and further writings will progress significantly. I truly think he has what it takes to make my imagination soar and I will continue to give his books a serious look. "
— Carol, 1/19/2014" This story was broken up into 2 parts, then and now. I enjoyed the story of "now" but found the "then" story to be boring. "
— Gail, 12/15/2013" For high fantasy fans, this one's intriguing. Unique characters, good action. I enjoyed it. "
— Lisa, 12/4/2013" Good read. starts a bit slow but gets very good towards the end. NOw have to wait for the next one. Don't think its out yet. "
— Donna, 3/16/2013" For his first book, Ross Lawhead did the family name proud. Good page turner and now I await book two of the trilogy! "
— Pastor, 2/9/2012" Along the lines of Dekker and Perretti... Fabulous book! Can't wait for the next one! Really great story line and fun characters. I won this book on Goodreads and couldn't have been more impressed! "
— Melissa, 9/30/2011" Fantastic read for those who enjoyed Narnia, The Inkheart Trilogy, and the Bright Empires series by Ross's father, Stephen Lawhead. Clearly Ross is a skilled wordsmith, and this was a really interesting fantasy book. His Christian worldview comes through but isn't blatant. Recommended! "
