From First Blood to The Fifth Profession, New York Times bestselling author David Morrell has delivered more high-octane thrills than any writer of his time. Here he shows his readers the secrets of real-life covert operators—and takes action to a whole new level.
Know him. See him. Stop him—or die. No one knows his real name or where he lives. Trained by Delta Force, calm in moments of absolute terror, Cavanaugh works as a protector for those rich enough to afford him and his team, stopping threats before they strike—silently, swiftly, and lethally. His latest assignment is to protect a brilliant scientist named Prescott, who has a secret so extraordinary he needs to disappear and adopt a new identity. For Cavanaugh, helping Daniel Prescott is just another job. Then it explodes, Prescott vanishes, and the protector finds himself in a fast, furious battle for his life.

"The Protector was an easy read. It had a good balance of action and story. I especially liked the fact that there wasn't the F-word on every other page. It's not horribly gruesome or lewd either. It's a page turner for sure. I truly recommend it."
— Tylor (4 out of 5 stars)
“As one would expect from a veteran pro like Morrell, there are plenty of twists, several impressive action set pieces, and a narrative that speeds like the souped-up Taurus (combining power and anonymity) that Cavanaugh likes to drive.”
— Publishers Weekly“The story unfolds quickly, accelerates to warp speed, and hurtles on to a stunning climax. And amazingly, in the midst of all the mayhem, Morrell draws more than a few complex characters imbued with layered motives and capable of intelligent dialogue. A wonderfully entertaining action adventure.”
— Booklist" It was a pretty good book. The beginning to the middle of the book was easy going, toward the end a little slow. Predictable ending. Pretty good, beat people up, shoot at people, car chase, constant action, kinda book. "
— Oliver, 2/9/2014" Could not do this audiobook the male reader had little to no inflection and read in a deep monotone that annoys me. "
— Juanita, 2/2/2014" I'd forgotten Morrell is when he is at his best. and his best is very, very good. Great read. "
— Michael, 1/28/2014" David Morrell has been one of my favorite authors for the past 30 years but this time he left me a little disappointed. I can't say this was one of his best. For such a smart guy, the main character does some pretty stupid things in this story. Such as trusting the antagonist even after he had murdered several of his friends and colleagues. The ending was a little disappointing too. The punishment didn't seem to fit the crime and the story ended a little abruptly as well.. "
— Greg, 1/22/2014" Very good, the ending is well done, not a surprise but well done "
— Denorris, 1/8/2014" The story about Cavanaugh brought in my interest on knives and Sig Sauer pistols. Splendid story. "
— Oliver, 12/23/2013" This book was very good. Lots of thrills and chills! Fast paced and action packed! Kudos to David Morrell for "The Protector"! "
— Lisa, 12/21/2013" Definitely non-stop action. Almost too much in some ways. "
— Charles, 12/10/2013" Not a bad read, but not overly awestriking either. If you have the time and need a light fiction read this is the book otherwise leave it alone. "
— Stefan, 10/4/2013" Excellent; a man hired to protect a scientist soon finds out that his portectee wants to ensure no one can find him, even the protectors who he aims to kill. "
— Joe, 9/8/2013" Non-stop over-the-top action... protecting EMS (Evil Mad Scientist!) named Prescott who created a "fear" hormone. Cavanaugh relentlessly pursues him after EMS betrays his entire team. Unbelievable! "
— Anita, 7/15/2013" Great action/adventure with twists and turns to keep your head spinning. "
— Kyle, 7/12/2013" One of my favorite Morrell books. The book takes you into the world of personal protection. There are many plot twists in this fast-paced read. "
— Mark, 2/10/2013" Good read. Not great but it passed the time. "
— Neil, 12/24/2012" Non-Stop action in the tradition of Morrell's other hit novels like Brotherhood of the Rose and Fraternity of the stone. Full of Thrills up to the very end. "
— Armand, 10/17/2012" Cavenaugh works for a private firm protecting and hiding people. Too much action that went on for far too long for me. "
— Laurie, 3/28/2012" An alright story, but not one of Morrell's best. the story revolves around Cavanaugh and his wife Jamie and their attempt to find Prescott who set up and killed Cavanaugh's protector buddies. "
— Frank, 10/27/2011" Non-stop action for our hero...I'm exhausted for him. "
— Jim, 10/5/2011" THis is the same author that wrote First Blood (Rambo). This story was action backed beginning to end. Fun, Fun read. "
— Brad, 9/30/2011" i didnt remember NOT liking the ending. very underwhelming and drawn out but the pace up until then was well. "
— Michael, 7/24/2011" Great start so far. Better than the movie by a long shot... "
— Jonas, 6/19/2011" WHAT? YOU HAVE NOT READ IT? GO GET IT! "
— Antonio, 5/31/2011" La película es una alpargata. Este libro tiene garra y no da descanso. Leído en un día, de tomo a lomo. "
— Speedy, 5/19/2011" Not Morrell's best book, but not his worst. The story in the book is WAY different than in the movie. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie too. In fact I think it was the best Rambo movie of the series. But I enjoyed a totally different and more human feel to John Rambo. "
— Tom, 3/20/2011" Action, lots of it. Suspend your disbelief of John Rambo and dive right in. Besides, the ending is different from the movie. Very different. "
— Peregrine, 12/13/2010" This was the first book I ever read cover to cover. Not the best book ever written perhaps, but it is the one that got me interested in reading. "
— Ausimik, 11/26/2010" If you are expecting a re-telling of the first Rambo movie, think again. Morrell's original version is similar in charcater and structure, the story takes a decidedly (and more realistic) darker turn. It's a well-crafted anti-war read. "
