Publisher Description

William Crimsworth escapes the brutal employment of his brother in a Yorkshire mill town, changes profession and takes a position as tutor in a boys' school in Brussels.

The authoress is unusually frank, for the time, in her scrutiny of the relationship between the teacher and the domineering headmistress of the adjoining girls' school, Zoraide Reuter.

Crimsworth manages to avoid the older woman's manipulation and begins a relationship with a poor pupil/teacher only to have these advances briefly frustrated by the headmistress' jealousy and dislike of the younger woman. The Professor is as good as I can write; it contains more pith, more substance, and more reality, in my judgement!Charlotte Bronte.

"I love Charlotte Bronte and this is a wonderful read (even if some of it I didn't understand as it was French lol). The glimpses of her Jane Eyre characters come through and as that is my favourite novel it makes me like this even more. Just a gorgeous read. Highly recommended!"

" I think the only reason I read it was because it was written by Charlotte Bronte. I think it was her first novel but it's decent. "

" Def. not my favorite by CB, who is in my top 5 of favorite authors. I don't know if this came before or after Jane Eyre, but it def. had that feeling to it without rising to its' greatness. "

" Jane Eyre is my all-time favorite book, so I was excited to read The Professor. I just couldn't, no matter how hard I tried, make myself like the main character. He's rude, condescending, and just plain boring. I forced myself to finish reading it, but can't say I really enjoyed it. "

" Bronte's first novel, and it showed. Heavy-handed and plodding/meandering. I wonder how anyone without a solid understanding of French would be able to get through the book without losing the plot (such as it was...) "
