Two nights before the devastating military strike on Pearl Harbor, a young half-Japanese singer is found dead on a Honolulu beach. The murder appears to be a simple crime of passion, but writer Edgar Rice Burroughs - creator of Tarzan and John Carter - has his doubts.

The writer's suspicions lead him and his son Hully to conduct a sub-rosa investigation into the sultry singer's death. Their pursuit of the killer coincides with growing rumors of an imminent Japanese attack against the Pacific fleet stationed in Oahu. Was the victim - who had links to both military officers and suspected spies - harboring a key piece of intelligence? With the clock ticking toward infamy, the intrepid father-son team races to crack the case in this compelling historical thriller.

Listener Opinions

" Good enough to read all the way through. Interesting the way the author took real characters in a real place at a real event in history, but the story is made up. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Harriet | 11/28/2013

" Although not a wonderfully written book, the combination of a major historical event (bombing of Pearl Harbor) with all the real players during that time in Honolulu and a murder mystery (fiction), made it a very "readable" book (although I listened to it). "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Richard | 9/26/2013

" Okay, no more. Edgar Rice Burroughs and son, who were there on the morning, best Jap spies. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 james | 8/29/2013

" The action starts on December 5, 1941. A lovely singer is found dead. It's OK, but a disappointment compared to other works by this author. In other books, there appeared an entertaining detective who lived 50-75 years ago. This character apparently never left the mainland. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Andrew | 8/19/2013

" If Edgar Rice Burroughs hadn't made his living as a writer, Max Allan Collins makes a good case that he could have been a first-rate detective! Intrigue in Hawaii just prior to - and during - the 1941 attack that drew the US into WW II. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Karen | 8/6/2013

" I got a little impatient for someone to die already in the beginning. I appreciated the summary at the end sorting what was real from what was fictional. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ivy | 3/30/2013

" I had trouble really getting excited about this book...there was more informaiton in it then I really think was necessary for the story... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Karen Musser | 12/8/2012

" I really enjoyed this combination of history and pop fiction. The characters were clearly drawn and, from what I know, accurately. The idea of a fiction writer solving a crime on the eve of a major world turning point is a 'novel' one! "
