Considered a master of the short story, Saki was best known
for his witty and mischievous stories that satirized the culture and society of
Edwardian England. In “The Open Window,” his best-known vignette, a teenage
girl regales the tale of an eerie family tragedy to a high-strung visitor, who
receives something of a shock.
