The Opal Desert is the story of three women from different generations with unresolved issues in their lives who meet in the fictitious NSW town of Opal Lake.
Kerrie, in her 40s, has just lost her famous sculptor husband who had been the centre of her existence and for whom she made many sacrifices and she now finds her life has lost direction. Shirley, approaching 80, was betrayed by her lover many years before and has retreated from the world, becoming a recluse living in an underground dugout. Anna,19, has a promising athletic career but is torn between the commitment to her sport, which could carry her to the Olympics, or enjoying life like other young people.
The friendship that develops between these three women, who meet in the strangely beautiful but desolate landscape of the opal fields, helps them resolve and come to terms with the next stage of their lives.

"A typical Di Morrissey read. Love the fact that she puts so much research into her novels. I already knew a lot about opals but learnt a bit more. Would go close to having enjoyed as much as Tears of the Moon - my first Morrissey read. Definitely would recommend." — Sharon (4 out of 5 stars)

" good but nothing to rave about. "
" A story of three different women who come together in an opal town out west. One has a history of mining for opals, but for the other two they are looking for something inside of them. It rejoices in women's friendships - where age is no barrier. "
" di morrissey is one of the best women's authors to come out of the 21st century! her descriptive narrative is so outstanding it makes one feel as f one traveled round all of australia!! i urge you to read every book!! "

" My first Di Morrisey book, and my last. Pleasant enough, predictable. I found the info about opal mining interesting. But, there are so many more well-written challenging books that I would rather spend my time reading. "
" A great story of friendship that develops between 3 women of different ages and at different stages of their lives. Well written and well researched - i feel like i know Opal Lake and Broken Hill even though i have never been there. "
" Read this book while travelling overseas and it made me so homesick for Oz. Been to Lightning Ridge a few years ago and after reading this book I'm planning another trip back :) "
" Was a bit disappointed with this story, it all seemed too predictable, and a bit amateur. have really enjoyed some of her other novels but felt this fell well short. "
" How wonderful. I really am loving the Di Morrissey books. A wonderful balance of lifes happenings without elongated scenes. Beautiful descriptions of the outback Australian scenery and perfectly constructed dramas. "
" An interesting location to read about but a bit predictable. "
