Plus Five Other Stories" read by Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. You can really hear that the brilliance of "Shrek" lies in the language Steig uses rather than in the slender story. The ogre's extreme repulsiveness gives Steig plenty of opportunity to trot out a vile vocabulary, but one of the most delightful moments is when Shrek accosts a peasant, who is busy "singing and scything," and Tucci snarls Shrek's greeting: "You there, varlet, why so blithe?" Shrek then robs the yokel of his lunch: "Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!"

About William Steig
William Steig (1907–2003) published his first children’s book, Roland the Minstrel Pig, in 1968 and received the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble in 1970. His works also include The Amazing Bone, a Caldecott Honor Book, as well as Abel’s Island and Doctor De Soto, both Newbery Honor Books. His book Shrek! was released by DreamWorks as a feature film and was immensely popular.
About the Narrators
Meryl Streep, considered by many movie reviewers to be the greatest living film actress, has been nominated for an Academy Award an astonishing sixteen times and has won it three times. She has also garnered two Emmy Awards, seven Golden Globes, and six Drama Desk Awards. In 2004, she was awarded the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also an Audie Award and Grammy Award–winning narrator.
Stanley Tucci is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He has directed five films and appeared in over seventy films, countless television shows, and a dozen plays on and off Broadway. He has been nominated for an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and a spoken word Grammy; is a winner of two Golden Globes and two Emmys; and has received numerous other critical and professional awards and accolades. He is also author of two cookbooks, The Tucci Table and The Tucci Cookbook.
