Publisher Description

The classic Christmas story of the fantastic dream of a little girl named Marie. She dreamt she saw an army of mice, led by the evil Mouse King, attack her precious Nutcracker, her favorite Christmas toy. Desperately, Marie took off her slipper and threw it at the Mouse King, which killed him on the spot. Instantly, the Nutcracker stood up, but now he was a handsome prince who danced with Marie to beautiful music.

"My 'grandmother' gave this to me years ago, and I have treasured it ever since. It is a story with teeth--lots of them, belonging to a rat king with many, many heads. It is dark and well-suited for adults, since it gives them something that is traditional, but not treacly, for the holidays. The illustrations are incredible, and the whole situations gives a sense of a world gone by."

" I think this would be the perfect book for any ballet dancer who dances in their local Nutcracker performances. It is a nice reissue of a classic. I grew up with Maurice Sendak's illustrations. It is so nice to be able to share his work with a new generation. "

" I love this book! I read it all the time as a little girl. The illustrations are wonderful and the whole book goes perfectly with the movie performance done by the Pacific Ballet Company (at least I think that's who it was.) If you like Maurice Sendak's illustrations, this gives a wonderful example. "

" The best version of "The Nutcracker" ever. Movie version is "Nutcracker: The Motion Picture" (NOT the version with Macauley Caulkin), The Pacific Northwest Ballet, set and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak. Beautiful and magical. Only available now used on VHS - which is a shame. "

" Great adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's story. The illustrations by Maurice Sendak were used as inspiration for a stage version, and capture the story beautifully. The 9-11 year-olds in my class love this book, and wrote and performed a play based on it last December. "

" It was a bit wordy, but the story was good. I could have done without all the war parts and descriptions that took up about half of the book. I thought it would be more suspenseful, but it really wasn't. Maybe in it's day, it was more suspenseful, but it was fun to read over all. "
