In the eerie wasteland of Dartmoor, Sherlock Holmes summons his devoted wife and partner, Mary Russell, from her studies at Oxford to aid the investigation of a death and some disturbing phenomena of a decidedly supernatural origin. Through the mists of the moor there have been sightings of a spectral coach made of bones carrying a woman long-ago accused of murdering her husband--and of a hound with a single glowing eye. Returning to the scene of one of his most celebrated cases, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes and Russell investigate a mystery darker and more unforgiving than the moors themselves, in Laurie R. King's The Moor.

"Ooh, this was a delicious and satisfying winter read. I've spent some time on the moors in this region, and love the area, which certainly helped me enjoy the mud, chilliness, and windily atmospheric setting. The greatest delight for me was the discovery that Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould and his home, Lew Trenchard, were real. I went on to read parts of Baring-Gould's history of Cornwall with nerdy enthusiasm."

“Erudite, fascinating . . . the most successful re-creation of the famous inhabitant of 221B Baker Street ever attempted.
— The Houston ChronicleThere's no resisting the appeal of Laurie R. King's thrillingly moody scenes of Dartmoor and her lovely evocations of its legends.
— The New York Times Book ReviewDazzling may be the word to describe King's latest Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes adventure. . . . Add King's devilishly clever plot and eccentric characters, her ability to achieve a perfect balance between serious mystery and lighthearted humor, and the charm with which she develops the captivating relationship between Holmes and Russell, and the result is a superbly rich read that would please Doyle himself.
— BooklistKing has the tone, mood, and voice precisely right. . . . Very good.
— The Boston GlobeMary's description of how she thinks through all the elements of a mystery--so deep in thought as if she were in a trance---is excellent.
— Salon.com" King's Russell/Holmes homage to The Hound of the Baskervilles. "
— Sarah, 1/24/2014" Not as good as the first two I read...too many names of places to keep track of and mentally visualize the setting without continuousally referring to the map. The book builds on this intriguing tale of the hound and horse and 'buggy' on the moor...deaths and witnesses accounts, then just plop...the end. "
— Melissa, 1/22/2014" Not enough wittiness and humor - too much focus on the Actual Historical Figure who features prominently, and yet never quite manages to come to life. "
— Elena, 1/21/2014" I'm done with the Mary Russell series, although there are still books in it. This book wasn't engaging, interesting, or even understandable, for that matter. I fear that the rest will be as grueling to get through, so I'm done! "
— Jacqui, 1/19/2014" I found this one a bit slow, but would still read it again when I need a Mary Russell fix. "
— Katie, 1/14/2014" I think I will give up on literature that rides the coat tails of classics. Interesting. Not great. "
— Robin, 1/4/2014" Least favorite in the series but still good. "
— Cheryl, 12/24/2013" Who knew that there was life for Sherlock Holmes after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? I found this whole series to be very good, especially if you like murder mysteries. It is nice to have such a strong female character. "
— Jen, 12/23/2013" I normally like this series, but this one got a little long-winded at points about the Moor. If found my mind drifting and realized when I returned that I hadn't really missed anything. "
— Teddy, 11/23/2013" Rather plodding until the last third so I'm glad I stuck with it! "
— Susan, 11/10/2013" Not quite a full 4 star - there were a few bits that I thought dragged but I really appreaciated both the "local color" and the plot twists. "
— Melissa, 8/9/2013" Good but not as interesting as the Beekeepers Apprintice. I think you need to read the Mary Russell books in sequence. "
— Sherilyn, 7/11/2013" Enjoyed the story and love Holmes being back on the Moor. I find sometimes it hard to read for the excessive descriptions and wanted to get to the meat of each page and the storyline. On to the next one in the series! "
— Juanita, 6/26/2013" Interesting and always a good read, although not as compelling as the 1st or 2nd in the series. These books aren't light reads, but they are good mysteries in the Sherlock Holmes style. I do enjoy the continuing illumination of Mary & Sherlock's relationship. "
— Tami, 1/19/2013" one of the better russell stories. i liked the moor but i wanted more sherlock. <3 "
— Amanda, 12/19/2012" Well, I guess I'm well and truly hooked at the fourth book in the series. It was slow to start, but engaging nonetheless; entertaining and informative. We learn a bit or two about Holmes' past, but nothing earthshattering. It was also fun to revisit the Hound of the Baskervilles. "
— Andrea, 8/7/2012" ilike thes novel so so much realy "
— Layl, 3/15/2012" I have read all of the previous Mary Russell books and enjoyed them all. This book was a little too slow for me. Even though I enjoyed the history of Dartmoor, the storyline dragged on. I look forward to the next book, but this one was not a home run. "
— Jon, 1/3/2012" Not as good as the first three; too much emphasis on setting and Curse of the Baskervilles story line. "
— Bonnie, 9/11/2011" Love Jenny Sterlin's narration. The Mary Russell books are my least favorite of Laurie R King's . "
— Elizabeth, 5/24/2011" I really enjoy this series. The author does a great job of keeping the character of Sherlock Holmes similar to the original. "
— Kassie, 5/16/2011" Just wonderful. The flavors found in the scenery and characterization is delicious! Can't wait for the next in the series to come out! "
— Vanessa, 5/2/2011" Love the Mary Russell mysteries! The only bad thing about this book is that it's the last in her Mary Russell series. "
— Kimkg, 4/10/2011" Very Clever and engaging! A great new find. "
— Donna, 4/4/2011" The best Holmes and Russel novel yet. King is brilliant! Left me wanting more. "
— Suzanne, 4/2/2011" Not my favorite in the series, but still thoroughly enjoyable. "
— Kat, 3/12/2011" Very good. I've read them out of order but enjoyed it. Good story line and I like the characters. "
— Jandblock, 2/22/2011" Mary Russell - Sherlock Holmes series "
