She is called Simone. She is the illicit lover of Dr. Emile Bastien, who practices medicine on the rue de Maubeuge, treating Parisians and Germans alike. However, Simone is more than his mistress—she is the guardian of all of his most dangerous family secrets. Still, there is one secret the mistress has not been let in on: an ingenious scheme that arouses her suspicions even as others plot to keep it from her at all costs. The mistress retaliates by hatching a plan of her own involving a guilt-ridden SS officer, a suspicious death, and a chilling interrogation. But an unexpected reversal of fortune leads to a confrontation that will have consequences no one could have planned.

Set in a hothouse atmosphere of growing paranoia with stunning twists and turns, this tour de force will haunt you long after the fiendishly clever denouement.

Quotes & Awards

  • “A fine wicked book…full of life’s guiltier pleasures…altogether enjoyable.”

The New York Times Book Review

  • “Roe Kendall’s capable voice brings life to the characters and the hardships of those terrible days. This macabre story of intrigue, deception, and hatred is chilling to the core, and Kendall makes it all the more believable in [her] flawless recitation of each person’s actions.”

    AudioFile

  • “Kendall reads in a brisk, fully accented manner that clearly identifies each character and lends the required Gallic touch to the production.”

" At the beginning I didn't really like it, but I don't know why I wanted to know waht was going on for this mistress, and from the second chapter, the story starts and I couldn't close the book. I enjoyed it and I recommend it. "

" Meh. Just enough interesting detail to keep me reading til the end but no pay off for doing so. None of the female characters felt real. But killing the Nazi officer by sewing cheese inside his guts during surgery? Genius. "

" Quick and interesting read. Lacked a little depth. The ending was tragic but a little void of emotion. But still entertaining. "
