Ten-year-old Floriana is captivated by the magnificent Tuscan villa just outside her small village. She likes to spy into the gardens and imagine that one day she'll live there. When Dante, the son of the villa's powerful owner, invites her inside and shows her the enchanting Mermaid Garden, she knows that her destiny is there, with Dante. But as they grow up, their romance jeopardizes everything they hold most dear. Decades later and hundreds of miles away, a beautiful old country hotel on England's Devon coast has fallen on hard times, and its owner, Marina, advertises for an artist to stay the summer. The man she hires begins to transform the fortunes of the hotel, and her family, but why is he really there?

"Another stellar reading my Roz Landor!! She's just amazing. :-) The story had me really hooked from the very beginning. I only listen to these while in my car but when I knew I was nearing the end, I was dying to find out what was going to happen so for the first time ever I actually took the CD into my home and finished listening to it. This is one of those stories where you become really invested in the characters and when it ends you want to know more about what may become of their future."

" OK.... not as impressed with it as I thought I would be. Slow in places. Ending a little predictable. "
— Dori, 2/20/2014" I really enjoyed this book, though I could have predicted the ending from quite early on! "
— Donna, 2/16/2014" Can not express how much I loved this book. Beautiful, poignant, and moving. Well written and intriguing. I listened to the audio book and was sad to see it end! "
— Stephanie, 2/10/2014" This is a beautiful and heart-breaking story. Most of the story was very well done with just a few parts of the plot completely unbelievable. Also, the mystery wasn't mysterious to the reader at all, but that didn't bother me too much. Enjoyable reading. This is the first time I've read this author and I will look for more. "
— Renae, 2/7/2014" It took me awhile to get into this book but I'm glad that I didn't give up. It has a slow start but a great ending. I was surprised by how all the characters just took it in stride and were fine with the outcome. "
— Kim, 1/19/2014" The family secrets, 3 generations of woman (a theme in her other book I read), beautiful setting and lots of love...what's not to like. A fun, enjoy time spent with characters I like. "
— Sheryl, 1/14/2014" Cute story, wildly unrealistic but a feel-good book nonetheless, with all ends tied up neatly at the end. I would have given it a 4 except that the author failed to create sympathy/connection for Clementine, who was one of the main characters, nor could I understand why Rafa fell for her. "
— Deirdre, 1/3/2014" LOVED this book! One of those books that you can't put down because you're in suspense about what will happen next! "
— Alma, 1/2/2014" The cover of this beautiful love story drew me in. Two stories - Tuscany, Italy 1966 and Devon, England present day entwining in a love story. Just beautiful. "
— Barbara, 12/31/2013" This is not the first Santa Montefiore book I have read; I enjoy her storytelling and this book didn't disappoint. There are 2 stories within this book and the way they intwine was clever although the need for the Baffles trail was unnecessary in my opinion "
— Nicky, 12/27/2013" feel like I've read this before, but it's not listed. Italian illigitimate baby in search of his parent. Similar format to Forgotten Garden, 2 interlaced time streams. "
— Gillian, 12/16/2013" this was a very interesting story. It is a very complicated love story involving Floriana, later known as Mariana, her son given up as an infant, and step-daughter. There are many aspects to the story. I would definitely recommend this book. "
— Shannon, 12/4/2013" This was a totally random pic from OD. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed listening on my commute. Rosalyn Landon did good job narrating. "
— Betty, 8/31/2013" Ok book. Moves pretty slowly. Not a "page turner" by any means. Great descriptions. Interesting characters. "
— Ann, 7/16/2013" Great vacation read. A mostly predictable plot, but a lovely read when this is just what you are looking for. "
— Briel, 2/11/2013" Almost as good as The French Gardener. Loved it. "
— Stephanie, 2/4/2013" Lovely story charmingly told. Descriptive writing let's you almost smell scents and hear sounds. "
— Tricia, 1/13/2013" As far as I'm concerned the plot didn't get off the ground quite quickly enough for my liking.... "
— Christine, 11/3/2012" I liked it alot. It thought that it was an interesting light read and pretty well written. Enjoy. "
— Audrey, 10/17/2012" A little predictable but I loved this story and the characters. "
— Wilma, 9/2/2012" I really wanted to give this book 4 stars, but it had several things going against it. It dragged much too slowly in the beginning, the plot was too predictable, and it was much too sappy at the end. While it was overall a fairly enjoyable read, I'm not sure I'd recommend this. "
— Julie, 9/1/2012" Loved this book. A nice easy read and heart warming story. The British version is called the house by the sea "
— Beth, 7/13/2012" Quick and easy! "
— Prina, 5/4/2012" Schitterend, onderhoudend boek. Lang geleden dat een romantisch boek als dit mij zo heeft aangegrepen. De eerste hoofdstukken vielen mij wat tegen maar het tweede deel sleept je mee tot de (on)verwachte ontknoping. Dit smaakt naar meer van deze schrijfster! "
— Luc, 3/27/2012" So disappointing. The author started with a strong story, and then gave up. Not a plausible ending. "
— Gail, 2/6/2012" Have accidently deleted my review. Grrrr. "
— Lynn, 2/4/2012" Similar to Pilcher and Benchy despite the fact I could see the punchline coming a mile off, an entertaining read. "
— Gail, 9/6/2011" I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic mystery. I really liked the way the author wove the story between two time periods. I also liked the characters and the settings in England and Italy. "
— Paula, 6/16/2011" The story line very similar to the author's book The French Gardener. A light, fast read that doesn't require a lot of thought or angst. "
— Harriet, 6/14/2011" I really enjoyed this book! The setting, the charecters, the mystery, the romance! A fun read. I want to read more books by this author. "
— Mary, 6/14/2011" Wasn't blown away by the writing, but nice escape. "
— Janet, 6/10/2011" Really enjoyed this book that had two stories going on at once. Beautiful writing and excelent characters. Similar to Kate Morton. Can't wait to go back and read her previous books! "
— Hollya, 5/27/2011" Meeh, this was a quick, weekday read, not especially memborable, and not especially good, but it kept my attention on a boring afternoon at work "
— Heidi, 5/24/2011" A very enchanting story with wonderful locations and characters. Great love stories and even a mystery that unravels between two locations (England and Italy)and time periods. "
