"I really enjoyed this start to what I think will be a great epic fantasy. In this first novel of the series we meet a young Sonea who proves to have very powerful magic. I suspect her power will continue to grow and she will become a formidable leader, something I look forward to seeing unfold in the next book!"

" If the plot had been less menial, or the writing more than just "above average", or one of other small things, this might have been a 4-star book. Definitely has a lot of promise, and looking forward to the rest of the series, though. "

" I loved this book. The whole series is brilliant, but I love the excitement and fear of the discovery of using magic for the first time "

" I found the whole book very boring and slow. I didnt care about any of the characters and the entire 'climax' at the end was just silly. There was very little build up and it didnt seem particularly dramatic. And I assume the revelations in the last chapter were meant to build some sort of suspense for the ensuing books, but frankly, it was too little too late, and i just dont care about it enough to find out what happens. The whole ending seemed like it was just a late addition that had nothing to do with the overall story and didnt really get explained well enough to make it fit in. Not going to read the next book to find out how it was resolved. "

" I didn't like this series at first. I was reading a lot of high fantasy at the time and I think I was expecting too much from this. It is what it is. It's not Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, but it isn't supposed to be. It is good. I'd like to read some more of Canavan's work. "

" I bought this book in search of a fantasy novel to read. I must say that the impulse buy turned out much better than I expected. It's a fantastic read. While not as well crafted as some books within The Belgariad series (Eddings), the plot and character development is amazingly good. "

" This book was okay- kind of predictable and the whole chase part lasted way tooo long. I had a hard time relating to Sonea's not wanting to join the guild, and also not understanding how she didn't get how he loved her. But I guess it leaves it open to future relationships. "

" After George RR Martin this was a bit Mills and Boon (but without the sauce!). I liked the story, although I found it irritating that Sonea didn't reach the Guild of the title until part two- what a waste of pages! I will definitely read the rest of the series- when I've finished with George! "

" Loved this book, especially the second part. The first was amazing, but it was all about Sonea running away, the second part, was like a seperate story altogether. Cery gets captured, Sonea gets blackmailed, up to the last page I was addicted. Absolutely brilliant! "
