Zane Grey's books shoot fast and straight from the hip, hitting readers dead center with thrilling action. His name has become synonymous with western adventure. Because of his killing speed with a revolver, Buck Duane has lived the lone-wolf life of an outlaw. Every day is a struggle against desperate men anxious to prove themselves-and a bigger struggle to hold onto his basic human decency. So when the Texas Rangers offer to deputize him for a dangerous undercover mission, Buck grabs it as his final chance for redemption. The trouble is, the odds are good that the mission will kill him. In books like The Lone Star Ranger and To The Last Man, Zane Grey takes readers to a time and place where men lived by the speed of their draw and the strength of their convictions. Narrator Ed Sala gives compelling voice to the lonely longing of a Texas outlaw.

"Zane Grey really has a way with westerns. I was a little disappointed with this one and it took a long time to finish the book. It was exciting but too mushy with the Rangers falling for the ladies. "

— Becky, 2/12/2014" I'm surprised again at the writing of Zane Grey. I enjoyed this book and I like Grey's writing style. His depiction of the old west is old fashioned and fun. I also like how the romance and self-sacrifice and redemption is portrayed A nice, light diversion from heavier reading! "
— Shawn, 2/11/2014" I really enjoyed Buck's journey. Grey was able to take me to Texas, I could see it, smell it and hear it. Wonderful read. "
— Jed, 1/26/2014" I love Zane Grey westerns. This was my favorite. "
— Karen, 1/19/2014" Entertaining tale of a gun fighter turned Texas Ranger. "
— Jennannej, 1/15/2014" Every once in a while it is fun to completely deviate from my normal reading fare and try something different. This was an entertaining enough read, although I enjoyed the first half more than the second (the first half seemed a little truer to human nature, less predictable, and less contrived). "
— Brent, 1/12/2014" Havingb never read Zane Grey, I decided to give the audio version a try during my commute to work. I found the story compelling, although the writing style is quite different from what has become acceptable today. The story is probably 80% "tell" (narrative), giving it kind of an old-time radio feel. Occasionally it gets entirely too wordy and repetitious, but all-in-all, the story was enjoyable - your basic good guy falsely accused. The book is read by Michael Prichard, an actor and audio book veteran who has read the Clive Cussler books and Nero Wolfe series, among others. He reads well and has a good voice. My only issue is that the main character, Buck Duane, is a 23-year-old and Prichard has him sounding more like a 40-50 year old man. "
— CJ, 1/11/2014" I have a hard time resisting a good western, gunslinging, cowboy romance! It was written a while ago and has a lot of western stereotypes but it was one very pleasurable read! +++ "
— Breanne, 1/11/2014" The story of Buck Duane. His transformation from bad guy (wearing black) into a good guy. Good story, fun for those not used to westerns. "
— Robert, 1/10/2014" Librivox.org podcast. First Western I have read/listened to and was pleasantly surprised. Will have to listen to more of Zane Grey. "
— James, 1/1/2014" For good old fashioned fun - not even close to Ronicky Doone or Riders..., but easy to enjoy, a nice break. "
— Bobwor, 12/29/2013" I quite like a good western..., what I don't like is soppy romance in the middle of a gritty read. "
— Red, 12/29/2013" Although I liked some things about this earliest of Zane Gray's books, it was not exactly great literature. His descriptions of the early West..to include areas I know well, were excellent and I will eventually try one of his later and better known works. "
— Jackie, 12/29/2013" Grey's writing is straightforward and clear, much appreciated these days. I could have wished for a stronger ending. On the whole, quite enjoyable. "

— Kyle, 6/5/2010Zane Grey® (1872–1939), born in Ohio, was practicing dentistry in New York when he and his wife published his first novel. Grey presented the West as a moral battleground in which his characters are destroyed because of their inability to change or are redeemed through a final confrontation with their past. The man whose name is synonymous with Westerns made his first trip west in 1907 at age thirty-five. More than 130 films have been based on his work.
