"Zane Grey really has a way with westerns. I was a little disappointed with this one and it took a long time to finish the book. It was exciting but too mushy with the Rangers falling for the ladies. "

" Zane Grey really has a way with westerns. I was a little disappointed with this one and it took a long time to finish the book. It was exciting but too mushy with the Rangers falling for the ladies. "
— Becky, 2/8/2014" Grey's writing is straightforward and clear, much appreciated these days. I could have wished for a stronger ending. On the whole, quite enjoyable. "
— MeiLin, 12/26/2013" The story of Buck Duane. His transformation from bad guy (wearing black) into a good guy. Good story, fun for those not used to westerns. "
— Robert, 12/11/2013" Deputy US marshall Russ Sittell is on assignment to investigate and stop the lawlessness in Pecos County, Texas. His mission becomes compromised when he falls for a local girl. "
— Fredrick, 11/29/2013" The best western I've read. "
— Richard, 11/11/2013" Every once in a while it is fun to completely deviate from my normal reading fare and try something different. This was an entertaining enough read, although I enjoyed the first half more than the second (the first half seemed a little truer to human nature, less predictable, and less contrived). "
— Brent, 10/30/2013" I quite like a good western..., what I don't like is soppy romance in the middle of a gritty read. "
— Red, 10/25/2013" An exciting and adventuresome story. Well worth the read. "
— Kyle, 10/15/2013" I'm a sucker for cheesy westerns sometimes. "
— Robert, 10/8/2013" Librivox.org podcast. First Western I have read/listened to and was pleasantly surprised. Will have to listen to more of Zane Grey. "
— James, 9/22/2013" Although I liked some things about this earliest of Zane Gray's books, it was not exactly great literature. His descriptions of the early West..to include areas I know well, were excellent and I will eventually try one of his later and better known works. "

— Robert, 8/7/2013" I have a hard time resisting a good western, gunslinging, cowboy romance! It was written a while ago and has a lot of western stereotypes but it was one very pleasurable read! +++ "

— Becky, 5/1/2013" I'm surprised again at the writing of Zane Grey. I enjoyed this book and I like Grey's writing style. His depiction of the old west is old fashioned and fun. I also like how the romance and self-sacrifice and redemption is portrayed A nice, light diversion from heavier reading! "
— Shawn, 2/11/2013" Entertaining tale of a gun fighter turned Texas Ranger. "
— Jennannej, 1/22/2013" Pretty good...although it felt like Zane Grey started out writing one story and halfway through decided to go in a completely different direction. If you like westerns this is good reading. "

— Richard, 4/23/2008Zane Grey® (1872–1939), born in Ohio, was practicing dentistry in New York when he and his wife published his first novel. Grey presented the West as a moral battleground in which his characters are destroyed because of their inability to change or are redeemed through a final confrontation with their past. The man whose name is synonymous with Westerns made his first trip west in 1907 at age thirty-five. More than 130 films have been based on his work.
