“Remarkable . . . Scott Lynch’s first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora, exports the suspense and wit of a cleverly constructed crime caper into an exotic realm of fantasy, and the result is engagingly entertaining.”—The Times (London) An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying. Praise for The Lies of Locke Lamora “Fresh, original, and engrossing . . . gorgeously realized.”—George R. R. Martin “Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven’t read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the Wind “A unique fantasy milieu peopled by absorbing, colorful characters . . . Locke’s wit and audacity endear him to victims and bystanders alike.”—The Seattle Times “A true genre bender, at home on almost any kind of fiction shelf . . . Lynch immediately establishes himself as a gifted and fearless storyteller, unafraid of comparisons to Silverberg and Jordan, not to mention David Liss and even Dickens.”—Booklist (starred review) “High-octane fantasy . . . a great swashbuckling yarn of a novel.”—Richard Morgan

"Wow! That was one riveting novel! What a talent Scott Lynch has - the ability to weave a complex tale, the skill to interject tidbits of critical information...casually, as though just as random background filler, and the power to craft characters that interact powerfully and really come to life! For what it's worth, I listened to the audiobook version - and the narrater, Michael Page, was A-Freaking-Mazing at rendering all the various voices - precisely and credibly!!! What a fun experience - both story and narration! I can't wait to get ahold of the next in this series ("Red Seas Under Red Skies")! Michel Page also narrates book #2 - - so I'm totally looking forward to this next experience!"

" 3.5 stars? The latter third didnt really do it for me, but still a good read. "
— Rob, 2/11/2014" Couldn't connect with any of the characters. The plot seemed ok but not all that interesting. Stopped 1/4 into the book. "
— Rmichno, 2/4/2014" A fun book that feels more like a caper movie out of the 60s than a fantasy book. Good fun with clever plots to rob the rich just to do it. I enjoyed it. "
— Daniel, 1/24/2014" You know that bit in Shaun of the Dead where he kills his mom? Yeah, that bit. There's a point in this book where it has "that bit" in it, and after that the whole story gets kinda rubbish. But the first half is jolly good. "
— R.J., 1/9/2014" simply amazing, can't believe it took me soo long to start this...just amazing. Finally some criminals with spunk. "
— Kofi, 1/1/2014" It's not exactly what I'd call meaningful literature, but The Lies of Locke Lamora is fun in a popcorn popping, summer movie sort of way. "
— Rigoberto, 12/26/2013" The Lies of Locke Lamora was truly excellent. One of my new favorites. If you've ever been intrigued by the idea of a well-run, clever group of thieves, this is your book. "
— Eric, 12/10/2013" Just ok, can't say I'd recommend it but wouldn't shoot it down either. "
— Smrathburn, 12/7/2013" Good book, a bit boring at first but get better. "
— Franklin, 12/1/2013" Love it so far--the prologue alone was worth it "
— Keith, 11/29/2013" The story was really really interesting and captivating. It was exactly like the other reviewers said, a mix of ocean's eleven and godfather. The author added a bit of filler in the middle to make it lengthy but otherwise it was an amazing ride. "
— Shanthan, 11/20/2013" It's Ocean's Eleven - with swords, sorcery, noble houses and good old-fashioned gangfights. A fun read, though a bit slow at times. Everything does come together in the end in a reasonably satisfying climax. Looking forward to starting the next book. "
— cuifen, 7/1/2013" This was a beautiful book. It was good, smart and funny. This is one of the best books I have read, in the fantasy genre or otherwise. "
— Nenad, 7/22/2012" Fun read! I think I liked the interludes better than the current day story. "
— Lynn, 4/4/2012" I love this book so much. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun reading a new author, and I can't wait to get to the next one in the series. Thank you, Scott Lynch, for reminding me how much fun it could be to read late into the night thinking "just one more chapter!" "
— Brenda, 2/7/2012" I loved the book but I can't recommend it because of the bad language which was completely unnecessary. "
— Kevin, 2/2/2012" A disturbing look into what people will do to make it in the world. "
— William, 1/14/2012" Not the kind of fantasy I'm used to, but this was really good. Loved Locke as a protagonist, and I saw none of the hits coming. Fascinating world and a great revenge story. "
— Josh, 9/29/2011" This book tricked, lied, cheated, joked, and murdered its way past every one of my other favorites until it was sitting on top of a pyramid built of the cold, bloody corpses of every other book I've ever loved. "
— Puss, 5/21/2011" It's Ocean's 11 + Pirates of the Caribbean starring Robin Hood! "
— An, 5/19/2011" It's been a long time since I've read a book this exciting and smart. I love all the characters in the book, and specially Lamora! Believe hollywood has already snapped up film rights for this book... "
— Anna, 5/12/2011" This was my first sci-fi/fantasy novel and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Locke is a well developed character, the plot is unpredictable in a good way, and the world created by Lynch is accessible yet still fascinating.

Looking forward to Red Seas under Red Skies. "
— Elizabeth, 5/12/2011" The audiobook version is very good; I love the narrator's style. The story is interesting, too, even with the swearing, which makes it seem more real. "
— Hpstrangelove, 5/10/2011" Great book combining the brilliance of a group of people in the line of Ocean's Eleven, but set in a fantasy world. Good writing, good humor. "
— Brandon, 5/8/2011" It's Ocean's Eleven meets Game of Thrones. Great read! "
— Justin, 5/7/2011" Really strong novel -- didn't let me get lost in the flashbacks (flashforwards?) by losing too much momentum. I'm a sucker for heroes who are Gentleman Rogues, so this was a natural: Locke is a con artist with a heart of gold. (Or at least a gold-containing substance.) "
