An orphan's life is harsh—and often short—in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains—a man who is neither blind nor a priest. A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected "family" of orphans—a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards. Under his tutelage, Locke grows to lead the Bastards, delightedly pulling off one outrageous confidence game after another. Soon he is infamous as the Thorn of Camorr, and no wealthy noble is safe from his sting. Passing themselves off as petty thieves, the brilliant Locke and his tightly knit band of light-fingered brothers have fooled even the criminal underworld's most feared ruler, Capa Barsavi. But there is someone in the shadows more powerful—and more ambitious—than Locke has yet imagined. Known as the Gray King, he is slowly killing Capa Barsavi's most trusted men—and using Locke as a pawn in his plot to take control of Camorr's underworld. With a bloody coup under way threatening to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the Gray King at his own brutal game—or die trying. Quotes & Awards

  • With a world so vividly realized that it's positively tactile, and characters so richly drawn that they threaten to walk right off the page, this is one of those novels that reaches out and grabs readers. Booklist Starred Review
  • “Fresh, original, and engrossing…gorgeously realized.”

    George R. R. Martin

  • “Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you haven’t read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.”

Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the Wind

  • “Remarkable…Scott Lynch’s first novel, The Lies of Locke Lamora, exports the suspense and wit of a cleverly constructed crime caper into an exotic realm of fantasy, and the result is engagingly entertaining.”

    Times (London)

  • “A unique fantasy milieu peopled by absorbing, colorful characters…Locke’s wit and audacity endear him to victims and bystanders alike.”

    Seattle Times

  • “A true genre bender, at home on almost any kind of fiction shelf…Lynch immediately establishes himself as a gifted and fearless storyteller, unafraid of comparisons to Silverberg and Jordan, not to mention David Liss and even Dickens.”

" Wow! That was one riveting novel! What a talent Scott Lynch has - the ability to weave a complex tale, the skill to interject tidbits of critical information...casually, as though just as random background filler, and the power to craft characters that interact powerfully and really come to life! For what it's worth, I listened to the audiobook version - and the narrater, Michael Page, was A-Freaking-Mazing at rendering all the various voices - precisely and credibly!!! What a fun experience - both story and narration! I can't wait to get ahold of the next in this series ("Red Seas Under Red Skies")! Michel Page also narrates book #2 - - so I'm totally looking forward to this next experience! "

" Couldn't connect with any of the characters. The plot seemed ok but not all that interesting. Stopped 1/4 into the book. "

" A fun book that feels more like a caper movie out of the 60s than a fantasy book. Good fun with clever plots to rob the rich just to do it. I enjoyed it. "

" You know that bit in Shaun of the Dead where he kills his mom? Yeah, that bit. There's a point in this book where it has "that bit" in it, and after that the whole story gets kinda rubbish. But the first half is jolly good. "

" simply amazing, can't believe it took me soo long to start this...just amazing. Finally some criminals with spunk. "

" It's not exactly what I'd call meaningful literature, but The Lies of Locke Lamora is fun in a popcorn popping, summer movie sort of way. "

" The story was really really interesting and captivating. It was exactly like the other reviewers said, a mix of ocean's eleven and godfather. The author added a bit of filler in the middle to make it lengthy but otherwise it was an amazing ride. "

" It's Ocean's Eleven - with swords, sorcery, noble houses and good old-fashioned gangfights. A fun read, though a bit slow at times. Everything does come together in the end in a reasonably satisfying climax. Looking forward to starting the next book. "

" I love this book so much. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun reading a new author, and I can't wait to get to the next one in the series. Thank you, Scott Lynch, for reminding me how much fun it could be to read late into the night thinking "just one more chapter!" "

" This was my first sci-fi/fantasy novel and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Locke is a well developed character, the plot is unpredictable in a good way, and the world created by Lynch is accessible yet still fascinating.

Looking forward to Red Seas under Red Skies. "

" Really strong novel -- didn't let me get lost in the flashbacks (flashforwards?) by losing too much momentum. I'm a sucker for heroes who are Gentleman Rogues, so this was a natural: Locke is a con artist with a heart of gold. (Or at least a gold-containing substance.) "
