Publisher Description

Michael Simon's crafty Austin, Texas, thrillers like Little Faith have earned him strong comparisons to crime novelists James Ellroy and Dennis Lehane. Detective Dan Reles is settling into his new life with a wife, a son, and a career in Austin's homicide division. Then his deadbeat, ex-mafia enforcer father rolls into town. It seems that Ben Reles has had a run-in with Sam Zelig, a powerful mob godfather who will do anything to get what he wants out of Ben.

“Simon usually explores social iniquity, and while race, religion, and class still inform the action (and Reles’ dismal home life provides plenty of pathos), this time he’s written more of a straight thriller…It’s fast, furious, and more anarchic than usual…We keep comparing Simon to LA Quartet–era James Ellroy, and the comparison is still apt; fans tired of the latter’s telegrammatic tics will read this very strong series with a sigh of relief.”

— Booklist

Quotes

  • “In his trademark neat, almost noir prose, Simon perfectly conveys the dilemmas facing a perpetual outsider determined to do the right thing. His hero is subtly drawn, his problems plausible and his colleagues…are smart renderings of believable types…A graceful thriller.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “The Last Jew Standing is a terrific detective story, smart, dark, and quietly, acidly funny at the same time. A wonderful read!”

    — Kevin Baker, author of Strivers Row
  • “The Last Jew Standing is a great rollicking yarn about good guys and bad guys in many splendid shades of gray. It is also a brilliant exploration of the complex ties of family and the price we pay for love and for loyalty. This is a crime story that transcends any bounds of genre. Michael Simon is a literary force to be reckoned with.”

    — Thomas Kelly, author of Empire Rising

" Veers between unrealistic to very stupid with a hefty side of cliche. What a letdown in quality from the earlier books in the series. "
