Publisher Description

From the critically acclaimed author of The List comes a stunning new novel about a girl who must say goodbye to everything she knows after a storm wreaks havoc on her hometown.

What if your town was sliding underwater and everyone was ordered to pack up and leave? How would you and your friends spend your last days together?

While the adults plan for the future, box up their possessions, and find new places to live, Keeley Hewitt and her friends decide to go out with a bang. There are parties in abandoned houses. Canoe races down Main Street. The goal is to make the most of every minute they still have together.

And for Keeley, that means taking one last shot at the boy she’s loved forever.

There’s a weird sort of bravery that comes from knowing there’s nothing left to lose. You might do things you normally wouldn’t. Or say things you shouldn’t. The reward almost always outweighs the risk.

Almost.

It’s the end of Aberdeen, but the beginning of Keeley’s first love story. It just might not turn out the way she thought. Because it’s not always clear what’s worth fighting for and what you should let become a memory.

“In this multifaceted novel, Vivian focuses on the psychological responses to impending disaster while addressing universal themes of first love and betrayal…Keeley is a realistically flawed heroine, and Vivian allows readers to feel intimately connected to the depth of her regret and her urgent need to reconnect with pieces of her past.”

— Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Quotes

  • “A transcendent love story, as profoundly moving as it is fun. This is Siobhan Vivian’s finest hour.”

    — Stephen Chbosky, #1 New York Times bestselling author
  • “Vivian uses the setting of a natural disaster, with dates and weather forecasts prefacing each chapter, to imbue every event in the protagonist’s conversational narrative with the weight of impending doom…Fans won’t be disappointed with this savvy chronicle of a girl finding herself amid the wreckage of her past.”

    — School Library Journal
  • “At its core, this is a love story—romantic, familial, and, above all, friend-to-friend—with a unique hook. Keeley, though brash, is a relatable heroine who will speak to teens facing their own times of transition.”

    — Booklist
  • “When disaster strikes a working-class town, the class clown learns her coping mechanisms don’t help anyone…A richly layered portrayal of bad boys, girl pranksters, even conspiracies. The almost-dystopian setting of post-flood Aberdeen makes a beautifully surreal setting.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “The premise of a small town that will soon be underwater might draw readers to this novel, but it’s the emotional plotlines that will keep them flipping pages. In crisis mode, the characters are forced to confront issues that everyone faces, and this makes the book relatable to readers of all ages.”

    — RT Book Reviews (4 stars)
