The year is 1967. Thirteen-year-old Maisie is at her decaying family home, once a medieval abbey. Lucas, an artist and friend, is painting a portrait of Maisie and her sisters. Maisie embarks on a portrait of her own: telling the story of herself, her sisters and their lovers, and of her friend, Daniel Nunn.
Twenty-three years later, Lucas's now-famous portrait features in a retrospective of his work. Daniel, obsessed by the sisters and determined to understand what happened that last summer at the abbey, pursues the answers to the past.

"I liked this story. For me it was about how a person holds on to a fantasy ideal about someone else yet the person is nothing like the fantasy and never was." — electriclemon (5 out of 5 stars)
"I liked this story. For me it was about how a person holds on to a fantasy ideal about someone else yet the person is nothing like the fantasy and never was."
" Quite a strange and almost depressing book. But interesting - I still find myself thinking about it, weeks later "
" A well-done story of youthful friendships and later regrets. "
" An easy read about a group of disfunctional people that I don't think you feel any sympathy for during, or by the end of the book. "
" Not one real person in it! Cliches of the gypsy and the toff type, and plot tensions thrown in willy nilly without adding to themes or narrative. I loathed it "
" If you are looking for a story with a happy ending, avoid this book. A tragic story of the secrets people keep, the impact they have on others lives and how things and people are not always what they seem. "
" Loved this book. Read it twice the same year. "
