From the New York Times bestselling author of The Cartel, The Force, and The Border
In Savages, Don Winslow introduced Ben and Chon, twenty-something best friends who risk everything to save the girl they both love, O. Among the most celebrated literary thrillers, Savages was a Top 10 Book of the Year selection by Janet Maslin in The New York Times and Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly.
Now, in this high-octane prequel to Savages, Winslow reaches back in time to tell the story of how Ben, Chon, and O became the people they are. Spanning from 1960s Southern California to the recent past, The Kings of Cool is a breathtakingly original saga of family in all its forms—fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, friends and lovers. As the trio at the center of the book does battle with a cabal of drug dealers and crooked cops, they come to learn that their future is inextricably linked with their parents’ history. A series of breakneck twists and turns puts the two generations on a collision course, culminating in a stunning showdown that will force Ben, Chon, and O to choose between their real families and their loyalty to one another.

"This is a little complicated to write about. It's kind of about family, and the 60s and now and drugs, Bush, Reagan, drugs, drugs, the Mexican cartel, Laguna Beach. It's very cool."
— Tom (5 out of 5 stars)
" prequel to savages. don winslow best crime fiction going "
— agough1, 3/10/2024" Definitely liked Savages a lot more, but this was still a lot of fun. "
— Matthew, 2/18/2014" Writing a sequel (well, prequel. Whatever. It's not important in this case) to SAVAGES was somewhat of an impossible task. THE KINGS OF COOL doesn't live up to its predecessor (far from it), but it's still a very good book. Going back to Ben, Chon and O was so cool. Their little world, their interactions, the way they do business. Good characters are like old friends. No matter how long you spend apart, they are always so much fun. There are inconsistancies between the timelines. The parents story doesn't work all too well, but obverall I was just happy to be with the heroes of SAVAGES again. "
— Benoit, 2/10/2014" Awesome!! Though not as good as the perfection that was Savages, KOC was still a great book. "
— Lynnanne, 1/22/2014" Quick entertaining read. If you liked savages, you won't be disappointed. "
— Jay_rusk, 1/18/2014" Even better than 'Savages' which I didn't think was possible! "
— Emily, 12/13/2013" A very quick read - fun, but didn't break a lot of ground compared to Savages. I wonder if future installments are planned? "
— Molly, 12/5/2013" Fast read. good prequel to savages. I was head deep before I knew what hit me and finished the book within 24 hours "
— Melly, 12/2/2013" Not as good as Savages which I loved. "
— Allison, 10/23/2013" A good job explaining the characters while still giving little surprises that keep it interesting. "
— Wcbeirs, 8/28/2013" Really good. I'd recommend that you read this AFTER reading savages. In the order it was written. :) "
— Sulgi, 3/13/2013" Chapter 10 of Kings of Cool is half a page long and it may be one of the coolest things I have ever read. Don Winslow is utterly awesome. "
— Scott, 12/23/2012" What a look into the drug world. It was a fast, captivating, twisting plot read. I read it in two days. "
— Gina, 9/16/2012" I finished this in little more than a day. Winslow has a very distinctive voice and this story, spanning across two generations, moves fast. "
