Publisher Description

As a child, hers was a dark fairy tale set against a wonderland of sparkling white snow, with the warm glow of candlelit holy day lanterns keeping the shadows at bay. Back then, there was innocence. And now she'll do anything to return.

The Kingdom of Childhood is the story of a boy and a woman: 16-year-old Zach Patterson, uprooted and struggling to reconcile his knowledge of his mother's extramarital affair, and Judy McFarland, a kindergarten teacher watching her family unravel before her eyes. Thrown together to organize a fundraiser for their failing private school and bonded by loneliness, they begin an affair that at first thrills, then corrupts each of them. Judy sees in Zach the elements of a young man she loved as a child, but what Zach does not realize is that their relationship is - for Judy - only the latest in a lifetime of disturbing secrets. As the walls close in, Zach finds himself needing to disentangle from premature adulthood. But the lines between adult and child have blurred, and life and sanity are unraveling faster and further than anyone could ever have imagined.

"I think I will have to read it again, I'm not sure what happened in it, well I get the general idea but I don't know the answers, i don't think, maybe I read to fast, I know I skim when things get a bit boring and ongoing descriptions of trees and leaves and mountains really were a bit boring so maybe I missed vital clues. Judy is clearly unhinged but at the start it seems like she is a normal woman who is starting to suffer from "empty nest syndrome" but she turns out to be a total nutcase, Zac seems like a typical teenage boy, act first, think later, hormones in overdrive."

" Review coming Oct. 21 as part of a book tour. Overall theme will be: the plot is dark, uncomfortable, disturbing, and Coleman is a hell of a writer. "

" Very interesting psycho-sexual drama where none of the characters are etched in black or white. Lots of grey shades here. Recommend, especially for book club readings. I think there is a lot to discuss between these pages. "

" A little slow at first, but overall good book. A lot of "cringe" factor though....I really didn't like "Judy" and was horrified over and over by her behavior. "

" Wow! Another excellent book. I've been lucky lately. The story did not end the way I thought it would, so it was unexpected, just the way I like it. Must read! "

" I had to change my review from a 3 to a 4 because this is the kind of book that stays with you and you just can't shake it. I finished it days ago and have read another book since and it's still in my head! Fascinating and twisted are the two words I would use to best describe this book. "

" Wow! engrossing, compelling, and slightly disturbing subject matter. I could not put it down. It would make a great book club book if you don't mind discussing controversal subject matter. "

" Picked this up in the Puerto Rico Airport, finished it by the time I arrived in Casper, WY. It was SO DISTURBING but yet, I couldn't put it down! I enjoyed the finalized ending, I don't really know how realistic it was (the ending) but I like how it wrapped it up. "

" I can see where this is a very touchy subject. But like one reviewer said. Its like that train wreck that you just can't not look at. You just have to keep reading to see how their lives lead to. "

" I felt very uncomfortable reading this book. I'm sure the writer wanted us to considering the subject matter of a teacher having an affair with a teenager. I felt as if I was looking at something I should not have been watching. Besides the affair, it was the slow unwinding of Judy and her life. "

" Exactly what I needed. I'm a tough audience, and if I'm not engaged with the characters in the first 10 pages, I move on. Life is too short for the number of books out there! I work in a library & have been recommending it to anyone who will listen! "
