About Samson Raphaelson

Samson Raphaelson (1894–1983) earned his place in the history of American film as the man who created The Jazz Singer. His career saw enormous success in the 1930s when he juggled Broadway comedies such as Young Love, The Wooden Slipper, and Accent on Youth with a burgeoning career as a screenwriter, collaborating with director Ernst Lubitsch on nine films, including Heaven Can Wait and The Shop Around the Corner.

About Al Jolson

Al Jolson (1886–1950) was a Russian-born singer, songwriter, and blackface comedian who performed in vaudeville and minstrel shows in the United States and starred in The Jazz Singer, the first feature film with synchronized speech. He went on to appear in films such as The Singing Fool and Swanee River, and he provided the voice-over for The Jolson Story, a film based on his life.
