" Very interesting book and although it is nonfiction it reads like a novel. His research was impeccable but so much detail bogs down the book. "

" I almost gave this one 5 stars. The sections detailing the social histories of the families were fascinating and well-paced. The chapters that sort of set the scene and the chapters on the Civil War (game-changer that it was) were less so. "

" Found a lot of elements of the family histories fascinating. "

" While the topic is fascinating, the prose reads like a doctoral thesis - factual, but dry and dull. I have a personal policy to give books at least 50 pages before giving up. I made it through 32 of this one before putting it down for good. "
