Publisher Description

A gripping series that combines Steampunk, spying, and a fantastic Victorian London.

The mysterious Mr. Socrates rescues Modo, a child in a traveling freak show. Modo is a hunchback with an amazing ability to transform his appearance, and Mr. Socrates raises him in isolation as an agent for the Permanent Association, a spy agency behind Brittania's efforts to rule the empire. At 14, Modo is left on the streets of London to fend for himself. When he encounters Octavia Milkweed, another Association agent, the two uncover a plot by the Clockword Guild, who are behind the murders of important men. Furthermore, a mad scientist is turning orphan children into automatons to further the goals of the Guild. Modo and Octavia journey deep into the tunnels under London and discover a terrifying plot against the British government. It's up to them to save their country.

"This was genius! Modo, a deformed boy with shape-shifting powers, is trained to be a elite spy in the mansion of Mr. Socrates. After training for fourteen years and never being let out of three rooms for his entire life, he is thrown into the dirty streets and alleys of London. After meeting Miss Milkweed, he must stop the evil Dr. Hyde before he unleashes his sinister plans all over london. This book is an elegantly woven peice of art and history blended into a thrilling novel. (It was almost as good as 'Jolted', a book by the same author)"

" An inventive tale with many interesting aspects, but the overall "this is what the bad guys are planning" plot is kind of confusing and disappointing. Good cast of characters, though. "

" all i can say is this book is fricken awesome. i love how its a mystery but it also includes another story, one of the main character and all his struggles with his face. its exiting and sad and sweet and it makes the reader think about all different aspects of society and how its not perfect because we're always judging everyone around us. anyways... i really lovved reading this book i couldnt even put it down untill i was done! " Fun! That's the best way to describe Slade's swashbuckling novel. There's fun to be had for all, but younger readers will especially enjoy reading the adventures of Modo, a teenage covert operative working in 1870's London. "

" 3.5 stars Still have a lot of fun reading it. This time Modo meets a French spy and gets on a submarine commanded by a group that is trying to build a utopia under the sea. Lots of nods to 20K Leagues. It was over a bit too quickly for me. I wanted a bit more. "
