"Delightful read! Fantastic, quirky but believable and complex characters. Oddly cheery for a pretty somber topic - Guernsey's occupation in WWII. I loved the story and the characters, particularly Juliet and Sidney. I've never read of Guernsey and this book left me enchanted and intrigued. I did not love the collection of letters storytelling technique - I think that is largely because I tend to read books in 30 minute increments so every time I picked this up I had to page back and remind myself who was writing to whom and when. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I had a few straight hours to devote to it. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could but I'm rounding up because of that. I loved and hated the ending - loved the outcome but hated the abruptness - tell us more!"

" One of my very favorite books ever. A well-told story "
— June, 2/20/2014" Enjoyed this book exploring the first hand experiences and loss of the survivors of WWII. The book was completed (reworked and editted) by the author's niece after the author's death and unfortunately the story suffers a little. Makes me wonder where the original author would have taken the interesting and eclectic characters of Guernsey. "
— Sheryl, 2/3/2014" Cheers!! "
— Leeann, 1/22/2014" WOW!! This book is abolutely amazing. The story had great characters and each had a great story to tell. Some stories were sad, some happy and that made it altogether a great read. "
— Ashley, 1/20/2014" A lovely book and an insight into something I knew nothing about, the occupation of Guernsey during the Second World War. I enjoyed it and, as probably predicted, the romance that blooms as you read the story. I found it odd that such a book was written by an American author, but it only shows now and then and why I found it odd I am not quite sure. "
— Abigail, 1/13/2014" Once I got used to the format of the book I got right into the story and now I want to live on Guernsey Island. "
— Rebecca, 1/4/2014" In the top ten of all my favorite books. "
— Cyndia, 12/29/2013" Really enjoyed this. I liked how the story was told through letters written back and forth. THe subject matter and time in history was new to me, so this made it even more interested. "
— Kelly, 12/11/2013" This is an engaging book. Don,t overload it with expectations. it claims your affection and deserves it. "
— Robert, 11/27/2013" Good, but very slow-moving book plot-wise. Characterization was excellent, and the WWII Guernsey Occupation recollections were informative & interesting. "
— Andrea, 11/25/2013" I didn't care for how this book was written. I like historical novels as a general rule but not this style. "
— Kathy, 11/19/2013" A wonderful book celebrating the human spirit, will and ingenuity! Thoroughly enjoyable! "
— Pushpa, 10/18/2013" This was an audio version and good, letters being read by different characters and very well done. I still prefer holding the book etc. I saw a DVD of "Island at War" that had a lot of these stories on it, yet was completely different. The history was all the same though and very good. "
— Sharon, 10/18/2013" Charming story but I think it could have been better written if it wasn't in letter format. "
— Janice, 10/14/2013" this was a truly entertaining book! lighthearted without dismissing context. "
— Sheri, 10/5/2013" This book is imperfect, but I really enjoyed it because I knew nothing of the German occupation of this British Island, and the description of life on the home front there was incredibly interesting. "
— Shazia, 9/30/2013" Love this book. At first I wasn't sure I liked the format of it being written in a series of letters. But I really enjoyed it and loved how quirky it was and how touching the story was. "
— Amy, 7/24/2013" heel fijn boek. "
— Lenny, 6/16/2013" One of the best books I've ever read "
— Frank, 4/22/2013" Really enjoyable story-includes romance, mystery, and history. From the letter writing I came to know more of the secondary characters and the relationships between all of them. Would highly recommend this to friends. "
— Stephni, 4/4/2013" Loved it characters are very likeable story is great "
— Catherine, 4/2/2013" You MUST read this book. "
— Catherine, 3/1/2013" Great fun - an 'easy-to-enjoy' story with lots of interesting characters and set on a lovely island. This is a feel-good story, which will take you to another place and lift your spirits and make you smile. "
— F, 2/4/2013" It took me a little while to get into it as the beginning felt a bit contrived. But then the endearing Guernsey characters drew me in and it became an enjoyable read with a very English feel to it. "
— Hermien, 12/10/2012" Go into this journey to Guernsey on your own... Before you finish this glorious book, you will feel that you've befriended each one of these characters, moved to Guernsey and be flawlessly saying the title by heart! This book is simply remarkable. "
— Adriana, 8/9/2012" LOVED this book! I have had it for two years and just never got around to reading it. I highly recommend it to all who love to read a good story. It brought back the appreciation of letter writing.....such a lost art! "
