Hugo Award winner Harry Turtledove is the master of alternate history. In American Front he envisions World War I as it may have been if fought on American soil. The United States and Germany clash with the Confederacy, France, and Britain as the machines of modern warfare litter the landscape with carnage. "Uh oh. I had made a list of books I wanted to read, even bought a few, and then on the spur of the moment, I decided to check out "The Master of Alternate History", Harry Turtledove. And, of course, I'm completely hooked. I am not going to say that these books are particularly well-written (think Tom Clancy, etc. More plot-driven than anything else) but as a huge history junkie, I can't believe I hadn't read anything by him before. In any case, he has 40-50 books, all over 500 pages, so I've got a bit of a task ahead of me. Can't wait!"

“This is state-of-the-art alternate history.”
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)“The definitive alternate history saga of its time.”
— Booklist (starred review)“Harry Turtledove has established himself as the grand master of the alternative history form.”
— Poul Anderson“Harry Turtledove is, quite simply, the best…and he is getting even better.”
— S. M. Sterling, author of Island in the Sea of Time“The master of alternate history returns.”
— Kirkus Reviews" An alternate history that really made me think differently about the civil war, and why a United States is so important. "
— Dianne, 2/12/2014" Cool premise, and based enough in the general aspect of WWI history to appeal to history buffs. Long, though, and it seemed like it took forever for things to happen after the (many, many) characters were introduced. And then not much happened. I'll read the other 2, but if they don't start poppin real soon, I probably won't read anything else by him. "
— John, 2/7/2014" I was finally able to get into it toward the end. Of the three Turtledove books I read, it was by all means my LEAST favorite. I enjoy science fiction writers' who have interesting ideas about history and politics and the way they work. That's why I enjoyed Guns of the South and How Few Remain so much. There was less of that in this novel, which had a large component of military scenes which frankly bored me. (I'm the kind of guy who skipped over Tom Clancy's action scenes and focused on the backroom political maneuvering in his novel) The book might have been more bearable if Turtledove had not featured so many characters/storylines. Some of them were disposable and did not really advance the plot (they seemed to exist for the sole purpose of reporting on the progress of the war) and took time away from characters/plot lines I actually cared about. But, I did pick up the next book from the library, so Turtledove must be doing something right. "
— James, 1/18/2014" didn't compele "
— Jason, 1/13/2014" Slow getting started, probably because it wasn't quite what I expected. A lot of characters to keep track of, but when I got into it, I was rewarded with a great read! "
— Chris, 12/18/2013" Never finished it. Found the writing too clunky, which surprises me given I enjoyed Turtledove's World War series. "
— Jeremy, 11/2/2013" Harry Turtledove re-imagines WWI fought on the North American continent, between the USA and CSA -- as well as on the seas and in Europe. "
— Denis, 10/26/2013" Turtledove is great at describing the endless tedium and frustration of war; he attacks it from all sides and perspectives, building a complete picture. If you're interested in the big and little picture of war and political events, this is great. If not, the reader bores quickly. "
— Bryce, 9/6/2013" The Charchters aren't as memorable as in some of Harry Turtledovs books but still a decent read "
— Henry, 7/6/2013" More silliness from the king of pulp alternate military history. Fun again. "
— Dergrossest, 6/22/2013" sucked terribly!!! "
— Tristen, 4/1/2013" this is an excellent book loved the characters and it is suprisingly plausible i showd it to my american history proffesor and he said the plot is actually beleivable "but a stretch" anyway its a great book i recommend this to all history and military book fans "
— Derek, 3/7/2013" First of three in a series about WWI. So far so good. Lots of characters to keep track of, but if you read it more frequently than I was able to, it'll be easier to keep track. I'm learning that on book 2. "
— Zach, 9/17/2012" This was a very intersting book about an alternate reality of Union vs. Confederacy during WWI "
— Dylan, 9/16/2012" A well done book, but kinda horrifying. I made it through but barely. Couldn't do the sequel because it was too depressing in concept. "
— Lisa, 9/13/2012" Interesting alternate history of the South surviving the Civil War and what happens when WWI breaks out. "
— Eric, 5/8/2012" it was a lot of fun, i learned alot. "
— Erik, 12/26/2011" Turtledove's Civil War alternate history now up to WWI. The North is allied with Kaiser Bill and the South is allied with the Brits. "
— Karl, 5/12/2011" Must get the next one in the series immediately! Looking forward to reading it during the holiday break. "
— Gwen, 4/1/2011" Harry Turtledove should not be allowed to write sex scenes. "
— Erik, 2/23/2011" More silliness from the king of pulp alternate military history. Fun again. "
— Frederick, 7/2/2010" A great novel for any history buff. "
— Austin, 6/30/2010" Turtledove's Civil War alternate history now up to WWI. The North is allied with Kaiser Bill and the South is allied with the Brits. "
— Karl, 10/28/2009" this is an excellent book loved the characters and it is suprisingly plausible i showd it to my american history proffesor and he said the plot is actually beleivable "but a stretch" anyway its a great book i recommend this to all history and military book fans "
— Derek, 10/22/2009" This was the book that made me realize Turtledove was never going to get exciting, but spend too much time explaining everything, as if he wants us to be impressed at his research. "
— Jason, 8/27/2009" Harry Turtledove re-imagines WWI fought on the North American continent, between the USA and CSA -- as well as on the seas and in Europe. "
— Denis, 7/26/2009" The 2oth century has often been called the bloodiest in human history. With this series, Turtledove shows us how it could have been WORSE...especially for the United States. "
— John, 7/25/2008" First of three in a series about WWI. So far so good. Lots of characters to keep track of, but if you read it more frequently than I was able to, it'll be easier to keep track. I'm learning that on book 2. "
