The New York Times best-selling author of the much-beloved The Saving Graces is back with a warm, winning new novel about daring to love, braving a loss, and learning to live a little.

How much change can one summer bring?

If you're Caddie Winger, 32 years old, still living with her grandmother and giving piano lessons to neighborhood children, one summer can make the whole world look different. Caddie's mother died when she was nine, and her grandmother raised her. Now their roles are reversed, and it's Caddie who takes care of Nana. When her grandmother breaks a leg and insists on going into a convalescent home, Caddie finds herself being pulled out of her comfy, self-made nest. Living alone for the first time since college, she uncovers some startling truths from her past.

Jolted, she looks at the world with new eyes and begins to take charge of her future. As she makes a new best friend, takes risks she never dreamed she could, and navigates the depths and shallows of true love and devastating heartbreak, Caddie learns how to trust other people and, ultimately, how to trust herself.

Wise, moving, and reassuringly real, The Goodbye Summer offers us a deeper understanding of the perplexing and invigorating magic that is life itself.

" Unfortunately, I read this book immediately after reading a Ken Follet book. It was written a little strangely, a bit choppy and the author left a lot unsaid. I liked the overall story, but hated the ending. It felt rushed and not complete, I liked the characters and I related to the epiphany that age is just a number and old people don't feel as old as they are. I don't think I would recommend this book, but don't regret reading it either. "

" I loved this story. It was endearing with some unexpected twists and turns. Patricia Gaffney is a writer who really understands that life is not always perfect, but you can make the most of it. "

" ok first i was really into this book. As a matter of fact it made me cry!!! THats how good it was, how attached to it I was. Only one other book so far has made me cry. I'll say it, I did not like the main character(Caddie) persona. She kinda pissed me off, being afraid of life and all. But the ending KILLED it!!! I mean come on how do they not end up together, or maybe they do and its all how u take it....i dont know. "

" This was a good book and a quick read. I love the endearing characters and their biographies. The Jack Russell Terrier reminded me of my own two terriers. My only disappointment is the ending. It felt too clipped. "

" As the star system says, this book was okay. I did enjoy it, but did have some problems with the main character, who seemed to feel super sorry for herself. Interesting characters kept me reading. "

" I read a lot of non-fiction and this was a much needed welcome relief from my usual reading. I would consider this light reading but it did have some substance to it unlike much of what is labeled chick lit. I enjoed this author and intend to read more of her work. "

" This is probably more like a 3.5, but I rounded down instead of up because there was just too much 'death' in this book. Every character had lost their mother as a kid, or a child, or a spouse... not sure what Gaffney was getting at, it was just way to excessive. "
