Publisher Description

RITA Award finalist and Christy Award winner Julie Klassen delivers historical romances brimming with the eloquence and intensity of Jane Austen. In an abandoned gatehouse on an old estate, Mariah Aubrey lives in seclusion. She supports herself by writing novels in secret-at a time when such writing is considered improper and unladylike. Soon the wealthy and ambitious Captain Bryant leases the estate and is intrigued by the beautiful girl in the gatehouse. But will he risk his plans-and his heart-for a woman shadowed by scandal?

"Dishonored and put away by her family, our heroine turns to writing novels to pay the rent. Sharing the estate is a man set on proving himself to himself, his father, and the woman who turned down his proposal. Funny how that goal seems to fall by the wayside when he meets the girl in the gatehouse."

" I enjoyed this book. Very Jane Austen-ish. Good writing and story. Just enough mystery and a little romance to keep it interesting. "

" This book was a nice, pleasant historical fiction read. It was a clean and wholesome story that kept me interested through the end. In it, Mariah is sent away by her father for some undisclosed (until the end) but easily guessed at sin that resulted in her being disowned, shamed by her family, and compromised. She flees to a distant aunt's house with her maid and lives in the gatehouse. From there she becomes a woman author, fights off unwanted advances from the owner of the house, becomes involved in a poorhouse across the road, and ultimately falls in love with another tenant of the property (who fights his own demons and preconceptions throughout the book). This was a nice enjoyable read even if it was a bit predictable and got a little too preachy for me at the end. Still, I would definitely pick up another book by Julie Klassen when I'm looking for something with a historical bent that isn't smutty and will end happily ever after! "

" 3.5, I went in with really low expectations so was pleasantly surprised. I didn't really feel the chemistry between the female and male lead, but that didn't really bother me. :) "

" It was my first time reading anything by this author. It was an easy read, light and with a predictable happy ending. Great feel good book, although some of the references to God seemed a bit random. I am all for God and religion in a person's life, but this was a bit forced and therefore, awkward. "

" This author really likes the fallen girl with a happy ending story. All her books are the same. It was a good story but you need to take a break in between all of them so you aren't reading the same thing over and over. "

" I tend to find Klassen's books a bit tepid. This was the best of the three that I've read, but the characters all seem vapid, with nothing to really distinguish each one as a unique individual. Still worth a read, I think, just not something I would add to my collection, by any means. "

" I'm a huge fan of Julie Klassen. This is the 3rd book of hers that I've read and just realized she's from St. Paul, not far from where I live. I really enjoy her novels and storytelling. I love the clean romance, historical aspects and the bit of intrigue. "
