" This book was a nice, pleasant historical fiction read. It was a clean and wholesome story that kept me interested through the end. In it, Mariah is sent away by her father for some undisclosed (until the end) but easily guessed at sin that resulted in her being disowned, shamed by her family, and compromised. She flees to a distant aunt's house with her maid and lives in the gatehouse. From there she becomes a woman author, fights off unwanted advances from the owner of the house, becomes involved in a poorhouse across the road, and ultimately falls in love with another tenant of the property (who fights his own demons and preconceptions throughout the book). This was a nice enjoyable read even if it was a bit predictable and got a little too preachy for me at the end. Still, I would definitely pick up another book by Julie Klassen when I'm looking for something with a historical bent that isn't smutty and will end happily ever after! "
