RITA Award finalist and Christy Award winner Julie Klassen delivers historical romances brimming with the eloquence and intensity of Jane Austen. In an abandoned gatehouse on an old estate, Mariah Aubrey lives in seclusion. She supports herself by writing novels in secret-at a time when such writing is considered improper and unladylike. Soon the wealthy and ambitious Captain Bryant leases the estate and is intrigued by the beautiful girl in the gatehouse. But will he risk his plans-and his heart-for a woman shadowed by scandal?

"Dishonored and put away by her family, our heroine turns to writing novels to pay the rent. Sharing the estate is a man set on proving himself to himself, his father, and the woman who turned down his proposal. Funny how that goal seems to fall by the wayside when he meets the girl in the gatehouse."

“Christy and RITA nominee Klassen creates a wonderful cast of engaging characters while neatly stirring in a generous dash of mystery and danger into the plot of her latest, charmingly romantic inspirational romance.”
— Booklist“The author has done her historical homework. Complexity of plot and characterization make this a cut above standard-issue historical romance.”
— Publishers Weekly" I love her books. Very easy reads for those times when you don't want your brain to work any harder than it already does. Nice story to relax to. "
— Brandy, 2/14/2014" I enjoyed this book. Very Jane Austen-ish. Good writing and story. Just enough mystery and a little romance to keep it interesting. "
— Gayle, 2/7/2014" This book was a nice, pleasant historical fiction read. It was a clean and wholesome story that kept me interested through the end. In it, Mariah is sent away by her father for some undisclosed (until the end) but easily guessed at sin that resulted in her being disowned, shamed by her family, and compromised. She flees to a distant aunt's house with her maid and lives in the gatehouse. From there she becomes a woman author, fights off unwanted advances from the owner of the house, becomes involved in a poorhouse across the road, and ultimately falls in love with another tenant of the property (who fights his own demons and preconceptions throughout the book). This was a nice enjoyable read even if it was a bit predictable and got a little too preachy for me at the end. Still, I would definitely pick up another book by Julie Klassen when I'm looking for something with a historical bent that isn't smutty and will end happily ever after! "
— Andrea, 1/28/2014" Loved, loved, loved this book!! I love this period of time and the message that God loves all of his children and is willing to forgive them as long as they repent and come unto him. "
— Abigail, 1/23/2014" Enjoyed this 'Pride and Prejudice' style book. Somewhat predictable but a nice story of forgiveness and redemption "
— Angie, 1/3/2014" loved the hinting at of Jane Austin herself and her characters within. felt like stepping into a familiar rhythm. "
— Chris, 1/2/2014" 3.5, I went in with really low expectations so was pleasantly surprised. I didn't really feel the chemistry between the female and male lead, but that didn't really bother me. :) "
— benebean, 12/4/2013" I loved the story it was a quick but good read. I loved the characters and it is easy to feel for them and want to know there story. If you are looking for a romantic story about forgiveness then this story will suite you well. "
— Laurel, 12/1/2013" This book was pretty predictable, but it was a good read. "
— Marisa, 11/20/2013" Fun read - not deep at all, fairly entertaining. "
— Cherri, 10/17/2013" I felt the story was a bit slow. Overall I like the story just not how slow it went. "
— Rebecca, 9/30/2013" It was my first time reading anything by this author. It was an easy read, light and with a predictable happy ending. Great feel good book, although some of the references to God seemed a bit random. I am all for God and religion in a person's life, but this was a bit forced and therefore, awkward. "
— MJ, 9/2/2013" This author really likes the fallen girl with a happy ending story. All her books are the same. It was a good story but you need to take a break in between all of them so you aren't reading the same thing over and over. "
— Charmaine, 5/17/2013" Another great Jane Austen type book well written by Julie Klassen. :) "
— Carol, 10/25/2012" Absolutely loved this book. Julie Klassen has never let me down! I'll have my review up later this week, hopefully! "
— Mimi, 6/16/2012" I loved this book. Every aspect of it was incredible. (I just can't currently think of the words to describe it more adequately) I hope to be able to put why I felt this way soon. "
— Sue, 3/3/2012" Good Regency book, an easy read. Fairly predictable, but that's what we like about these romances. "
— Amy, 12/15/2011" A delightful Jane Austen type novel. Full of twists and character. I really enjoyed reading this book. "
— Heidi, 11/12/2011" An enjoyable read, it is quick to move but rarely tugs at the heart strings. The characters seem two dimensional but may be on purpose with regard to the time period it reflects. "
— Amber, 11/11/2011" I liked this book, Jane Austen-esque but easier to read. "
— Marianne, 9/2/2011" It was a little predictable, but I still enjoyed it. "
— Lynette, 5/13/2011" I really enjoyed this book but there were too many sub-stories for my liking! I'd still recommend it tho! "
— Megan, 5/10/2011" This was a good read. I think I was a little disappointed because they mention Jane Austen type book, and as that is one of my all time favorite authors I was left wanting more of her feel. Still a fun and romantic read. "
— Tara, 5/9/2011" Enjoyed the small little mysteries within the main story. Plot lacked originality. "
— Kathryn, 5/7/2011" a sweet, romantic novel. Very reminiscent of Jane Austen's era. "
— Heidi, 5/6/2011" I tend to find Klassen's books a bit tepid. This was the best of the three that I've read, but the characters all seem vapid, with nothing to really distinguish each one as a unique individual. Still worth a read, I think, just not something I would add to my collection, by any means. "
— Adrianna, 5/6/2011" I'm a huge fan of Julie Klassen. This is the 3rd book of hers that I've read and just realized she's from St. Paul, not far from where I live. I really enjoy her novels and storytelling. I love the clean romance, historical aspects and the bit of intrigue. "
