Publisher Description

Captain Ann Campbell is a West Point graduate, the daughter of legendary General "Fighting Joe" Campbell. She is the pride of Fort Hadley until, one morning, her body is found, naked and bound, on the firing range.

Paul Brenner is a member of the Army's elite undercover investigative unit and the man in charge of this politically explosive case. Teamed with rape specialist Cynthia Sunhill, with whom he once had a tempestuous, doomed affair, Brenner is about to learn just how many people were sexually, emotionally, and dangerously involved with the Army's "golden girl." And how the neatly pressed uniforms and honor codes of the military hide a corruption as rank as Ann Campbell's shocking secret life.

" I liked this, but did not love it. I loved the characters, but the relationship between between John and Cynthia was so under-developed as to seem unlikely. I also disliked the fact that the "solution" was still so gray, and had not really been corroborated by anyone. One of several things could have happened - I like my endings more black and white! "

" A wonderful thing about rental beach houses is that there is usually a bookshelf stuffed with what we would all call "a good summer read". Was able to finish this one but had to leave "The Scarecrow" by Michael Connolly behind. Well, a good summer read it was. "

" Brenner is a military investigator dispatched to an army base to investigate a murder. The victim is Ann Campbell an up-an-coming soldier and the daughter of a Fort Hadley's general. Brenner discovers she was a woman of loose morals and this may have led to her murder. Brenner is reunited with an old girlfriend, who is assigned to help with the investigation. Beneath the surface lurks scandals and secrets that can destory many. This is a captivating mystery. "

" All in all, a really good mystery. My only problem with this book is that the character who ends up being best developed is dead the entire book. I ended up not really caring about the antagonists or their lives or their relationship. In fact, the story could have been told just as well without knowing anything about their romantic involvement at all. I'd read another of DeMille's mysteries, but not because of his detectives. "
