Publisher Description

A warm, funny, moving, and unsentimental tale of one family and the English countryside. After 200 years of farming in Yorkshire, the Benson family was forced to sell up. They found, like so many, that the land could no longer support them. While the farming way of life never came naturally to Richard Benson, a point that sent him running to London, he still feels his parents' loss and returns to do what he can to help. In The Farm he tells of his childhood, the changing landscape, and of how his family has adapted to a new life after being forced to give up their birthright.

"A perceptive, poignant story of a Yorkshire family and its farm. The book was short-listed for the Guardian First Book Award in 2005. Benson talks about his family and their plight in a balanced, and even humourous manner. The Yorkshire dialogue is spot on. "

" A lovely book, recalling the nature of small scale farming in the last 60 years and how it has changed. Salutary reminder of what of what we have lost to big scale agriculture, and how much of our food is now imported. "

" This was informative, interesting, well written, somewhat sad, and amusing. Why can't more books be so good? "

" This book was interesting for me since I'm living in England and have friends who live in Yorkshire right near where the story takes place. It's sad to realize that the former farming way of life is dying out but I'm not sure the book would have that much interest to others. "
