A hysterical phone call from his ex-wife and a familiar face in a photograph upend Henry Archer's life. Henry is a lawyer, an old-fashioned man, gay, successful, and lonely. Thalia, his stepdaughter from a misbegotten marriage, is now twenty-nine, an actress, hopeful and estranged from her newly widowed crackpot mother. Hoping it will lead to better things for her career, Thalia poses as the girlfriend of a former sitcom star and current horror-movie luminary who is down on his romantic luck. When Thalia and her complicated social life move into the basement of Henry’s Upper West Side townhouse, she finds a champion in her long-lost father, and he finds new life—and maybe even new love—in the commotion.

"What an enjoyable book! I sat down yesterday afternoon to get through a few chapters and found myself stuck to my seat until the end. It wasn't that the story was so compelling or the writing was so fabulous, it was that the characters were so enchanting that I just wanted to keep spending time with them. I can't ever remember falling so in love with a main character as I did with John Henry Archer. His relationship with Todd fit like a glove and I appreciate that we are finally seeing well rounded gay characters in uncomplicated relationships. If only Hollywood would follow suit. I love that there really isn't much of a conflict in the book, it's really just a period in the life of this eccentric, yet ultimately loving family. Makes me appreciate all the odd people that make up my life-what would we all do without them?"

" i enjoyed this book even if the ending was predictable. it was humorous. "
— Heidi, 2/18/2014" I enjoyed Ms. Lipman's book, "The Pursuit of Alice Thrift," but was very disappointed in this one. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood but I found it very poorly written. The concept for the book is a good one - divorced father who has made peace with his homosexuality develops relationship with his long-lost, adopted daughter...it is supposed to be a comedy and could have been hilarious, but the dialogue and plot struck me as forced, whereas "Alice," despite being predictable, was quite believable and truly funny. "
— Diane, 2/14/2014" Elinor Lipman is a hoot. She's a romantic with a hard edge. This story of a gay man reconnecting with his daughter makes you gasp with some of its smart dialog. The ex-wife puts your teeth on edge. Very quick and fun read. "
— Judy, 2/7/2014" A Dad is reunited with a step daughter he hasn't seen since she was a baby. Some good laughs, nice characters. "
— Linda, 2/7/2014" Enjoyable enough but I just kept waiting for something to happen that was...real/believable/not complete fluff :P "
— Racheal, 1/25/2014" I loved this book for the first 10 chapters or so - so delicious and non-threatening and clipping along at a good pace. I was thrilled to find such a good non-guilty pleasure author. But then the plot went off the wheels, the character we were meant to love irked me and the ending - someone explain the ending to me, will you? Disappointing because it started so strong and light and sweet... "
— Kyla, 1/20/2014" A delightful, charming read with entirely lovable characters. I'll definitely look at more of the author's work. "
— Chris, 1/14/2014" This book was a quick and easy read. The ending seemed to rush as all the ends of the story were tied up. "
— Peter, 1/9/2014" Oh, I do love Elinor Lipman. Another winner here. How does she come up with these characters? Love them all. "
— Sally, 10/20/2013" An enjoyable book re an ex-wife, an ex-adopted daughter, a gay ex-husband and how they all got together after many years to tell a funny story that will make u laugh. Loved it! "
— Deb, 10/9/2013" A delightful social comedy for the 21st century. "
— SheilaRaeO, 9/18/2013" Another hit from Elinor Lipman! This was light and fun, just what the doctor ordered. I loved the main characters, especially enjoying the relationship between Henry and Todd. Lipman's wit and East Coast sensibilities make for a pleasurable page turner. "
— Sarah, 9/9/2013" This is a great discovery. She's really funny! "
— Gail, 8/17/2013" What fun!!! Please consider reading this only in private as your constant bursts of laughter is bound to irritate those around you. "
— Peggy, 8/13/2013" Really a 3.6 or 3.7. I'm really a sucker for her books--nothing stunning, but just solidly written stories about people with great humor throughout. "
— Giovanna, 7/26/2013" Elinor Lipman is on the very short list of authors (less than 10) that I have read everything they've written. When she is good, she is VERY good (e.g. The Inn at Lake Divine) This is right up there with that one. Modern, urban comedy of manners. Light reading but intelligent. "
— MaryAlice, 3/11/2013" I loved this book. Funny and smart. Interesting characters with great dialogue. Appreciate a story that realistically weaves together a collection of different people into a family. "
— Cathy, 11/30/2012" Book was billed as "hilarious" so I expected to be rolling on the floor, but not so. Ending didn't seem to fit with the flow either. "
— Julie, 11/16/2012" I thought the story line was great and I liked her character development, although some plot lines seemed a little rushed. A really fun read though. "
— Cat, 11/14/2012" Elinor Lipman makes me want to meet her characters in real life. "
— Stephanie, 11/8/2012" My friend Sally's husband bought the ability to have her name be a character in this book at a charity auction. "
— Heather, 10/15/2012" Loved the beginning, the end was not so good. "
— Denise, 9/16/2012" I love Elinor Lipman. She's witty but poignant, clever but deep. Delightful writing. Fast-paced, but you don't know where the plot is going. The Family Man is one of my top faves of her books. "
— Nancy, 9/2/2012" I devoured this book! I read it in less then 48 hrs and was very sad when it was over! LOVED Todd's mom! Read it and see! "
— Toocrazycosmoyahoo.com, 5/31/2012" Amusing, entertaining, and a quick read. "
— marcy, 5/1/2012" Lipman does it again. With her usual sense of class and humor, she assembles a typically ragtag cast of characters from the gay stepdad to the actress-wannabe-daughter to her horror-film-star paramour. And a Lipman book just wouldn't be complete without an overbearing mother. It's all there. "
— Anika, 5/1/2012" I enjoyed most of it. The ending seemed to be, "OK, I've written 300 pages time to go...... "
— Mom, 12/28/2011" Entertaining, easy to read and very funny. "
— Karen, 5/19/2011" A very cute and quick read! "
— Mandy, 4/10/2011" Easy to read, sweet story. Love the happy ending. "
— Jackie, 4/1/2011" i love books about gay men "
— Sarah, 3/27/2011" I liked Henry and how he took in his ex step daughter -but too much random stuff happened at the end.
I listened to this book and liked the narrator Jonathan Davis "
— Beverly, 3/21/2011" Very cute book. Laughed out loud several times! "
— Jamie, 2/27/2011" A smart and funny update of the classic Harlequin Romance "marriage of convenience." told from the point of view of the ex-stepfather. Possibly not Lipman's all-time best but a fun read. "
— Anne, 2/6/2011" Disappointing new novel from the usually reliable Elinor Lipman. Suppose it's a trendy modern day love story, but the characaters were superficial and the book, overall, was formulaic.
"
— Linda, 2/1/2011" Not my usual genre...however, so far...witty! Not my genre for a reason...too much angst. "
— Debbie, 1/25/2011" What fun!!! Please consider reading this only in private as your constant bursts of laughter is bound to irritate those around you. "
— Peggy, 1/8/2011" I loved this book. Funny and smart. Interesting characters with great dialogue. Appreciate a story that realistically weaves together a collection of different people into a family. "
— Cathy, 1/3/2011" Thank you, Annabelle, for introducing me to Elinor Lipman. I always feel so involved in her characters' lives. What a mensch Henry Archer is. "
