A hysterical phone call from his ex-wife and a familiar face in a photograph upend Henry Archer's life. Henry is a lawyer, an old-fashioned man, gay, successful, and lonely. Hoping it will lead to better things for her career, Thalia poses as the girlfriend of a former sitcom star and current horror-movie luminary who is down on his romantic luck. "What an enjoyable book! I sat down yesterday afternoon to get through a few chapters and found myself stuck to my seat until the end. It wasn't that the story was so compelling or the writing was so fabulous, it was that the characters were so enchanting that I just wanted to keep spending time with them. I can't ever remember falling so in love with a main character as I did with John Henry Archer. His relationship with Todd fit like a glove and I appreciate that we are finally seeing well rounded gay characters in uncomplicated relationships. If only Hollywood would follow suit. I love that there really isn't much of a conflict in the book, it's really just a period in the life of this eccentric, yet ultimately loving family. Makes me appreciate all the odd people that make up my life-what would we all do without them?"

" i enjoyed this book even if the ending was predictable. it was humorous. "
— Heidi, 2/18/2014" I enjoyed Ms. Lipman's book, "The Pursuit of Alice Thrift," but was very disappointed in this one. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood but I found it very poorly written. The concept for the book is a good one - divorced father who has made peace with his homosexuality develops relationship with his long-lost, adopted daughter...it is supposed to be a comedy and could have been hilarious, but the dialogue and plot struck me as forced, whereas "Alice," despite being predictable, was quite believable and truly funny. "
— Diane, 2/14/2014" Elinor Lipman is a hoot. She's a romantic with a hard edge. This story of a gay man reconnecting with his daughter makes you gasp with some of its smart dialog. The ex-wife puts your teeth on edge. Very quick and fun read. "
— Judy, 2/7/2014" A Dad is reunited with a step daughter he hasn't seen since she was a baby. Some good laughs, nice characters. "
— Linda, 2/7/2014" Enjoyable enough but I just kept waiting for something to happen that was...real/believable/not complete fluff :P "
— Racheal, 1/25/2014" I loved this book for the first 10 chapters or so - so delicious and non-threatening and clipping along at a good pace. I was thrilled to find such a good non-guilty pleasure author. But then the plot went off the wheels, the character we were meant to love irked me and the ending - someone explain the ending to me, will you? Disappointing because it started so strong and light and sweet... "
— Kyla, 1/20/2014" A delightful, charming read with entirely lovable characters. I'll definitely look at more of the author's work. "
— Chris, 1/14/2014" This book was a quick and easy read. The ending seemed to rush as all the ends of the story were tied up. "
— Peter, 1/9/2014" Oh, I do love Elinor Lipman. Another winner here. How does she come up with these characters? Love them all. "
— Sally, 10/20/2013" An enjoyable book re an ex-wife, an ex-adopted daughter, a gay ex-husband and how they all got together after many years to tell a funny story that will make u laugh. Loved it! "
— Deb, 10/9/2013" A delightful social comedy for the 21st century. "
