Publisher Description

The Founding Fathers believed that the proper goal of the State was to make men and women free to develop their faculties and to pursue virtue and wisdom. Our Constitution was built around these principles, protecting civil liberties and developing a careful system of checks and balances that protected our freedom from tyranny.

Naomi Wolf's latest work, The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, exposes how the escalation of executive power has eroded these core values and systems, limiting Congress's ability to make laws and our courts' power to interpret them—a scenario that our Founding Fathers foresaw and warned against. Wolf outlines in this citizen call to action—which is reminiscent of Thomas Paine's revered Common Sense—the real threats to our civil liberties that exist and explains how by working together we can stop the growing threat.

The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot is the centerpiece to the American Freedom Agenda, a nonpartisan organization of which Naomi Wolf is a founding board member and which asks all Americans to support a "Freedom Pledge" to support only candidates who favor restoring the pillars of American liberty. It combines a wide host of partners, united in their belief that when it comes to the Constitution, we are neither conservative nor liberal; we are all Americans.

"What would it take for the United States to become a "closed" society? And what are the steps an administration takes on the way to fascist regime? These are the questions that Wolf explores in her fascinating, yet brief book, "The End of America." The book explores the roots of the American constitution and suggests how the Founding Father's would respond the post 9/11 Bush Administration's encroachment on our civil liberties. This book made me critically think about our government in historical context. It also motivated me to talk to other people about the importance of human rights and political activism."

" This sounded a little dated with all its references to the Bush administration policies, but was still a chilling read the week of the UC Davis pepper spraying of non-violent protesters and crack down on OWS including press intimidation and suppression. "

" This book is true, frightening, and important. Corporate fascism is alive and well in the U.S. today, and this book is a call to action for a new generation of American patriots. If you read this book, you will understand the importance of the Ron Paul Revolution. "

" This book should have been better than it was. She lays out the plan at the start -- she's going to go through a list of the 10 warning signs of impending fascism, point to historical examples of each, and then show similar examples from the present day US. I didn't think she'd do it quite that formulaically -- but she does, and it ends up being a little tedious. I did like that she went for historical parallels beyond the Big Uglies of Stalin and Hitler -- since things that happen in lesser totalitarian states are often a better guide, less well-known, and pretty nasty in their own right. As for the argument, I suppose you could say that about half of her modern-day examples are pretty thin and feel like stretching to make the point. Except, that about half are not, and that's just fucking terrifying right there. "

" Well, this is something every person concerned with the future of America should read! Much of what was presented in the book wasn't new to me but the way it was put forward with reference to historic events and detailed current events...it blew my mind. It has made me more passionate about saving this democracy, even with it's flaws it could be worse. It is quickly on it's way downhill if we don't change direction. "
