Publisher Description

Three children - Jerry (bossy), Jimmy (hungry), and Kathleen (sensible) - find themselves standing in front of a bejewelled princess in the garden of an enchanted castle. It is the first day of their summer holidays. Is she really a princess? And if she isn't, what about her ring, which makes the wearer invisible? This ring, combined with the children's appetite for exploring, sparks a tale full of vivid adventures and extraordinary characters.

With ugly-wugglies on the loose, statues alive in the moonlight and crimes needing to be solved, there is never a dull moment. Imagination is powerful; magic is possible.

"This book is like a charm offensive: there's a British country house, the scenes are picturesque, it's summertime, the kids are precocious, the pictures are dreamy, the language is witty, the plot is whimsical... I'm sure it's too precious for most adults, rather difficult and dated for most children, but for a certain type of reader...say, me...this is that the kind of book that is a dream for some lazy summer reading."

" While I enjoyed the essence of the story, I found that it dragged on for too long. Towards the end, I found myself skipping larger and larger sections because it was predictable anyway. "

" This is a fanciful book full of fun adventures. I found it funny that the children had such a hard time keeping track of the enchanted ring. I liked the adventures with the Ugli-Wugli's and the living statues the best. I was glad it had a fairy tale ending with a lord and lady. "

" Read this to the girls. They love it. E. Nesbit was an influence on C.S. Lewis. We have read a number of her books and love them. This book has a ring that makes you invisible and reveals alternate realities - so C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were not the first to think this up. "

" At times a 4 star read, but when the ending was clear with a hundred pages left it did seem to drag. When one of the white children blackens his face and arms with lead to look like a conjurer and perform tricks, another star seemed to just fly away as if by magic. "

" My incomplete education strikes again. How did I miss out on this one as a child? Enchanted statues, magic rings, Ugly-Wuglies, secret passages, Edwardian time frame...really good stuff that younger me would have been completely wild for. Older me was pretty delighted as well. "

" Loved it all over again. I think I still have, in a box in the cellar, the map of the castle grounds I made when I read this as a kid. I enjoyed the humor even more now, because I "got" more of it than I did when I was 11. "

" When Gerald, Kathleen and Jimmy find the enchanted castle they don't immediately take it seriously. Yet bit by bit they realize the magic is more powerful than expected, and they need every ounce of imagination and courage to come out on top. "

" Jessica brought this one home. Written over a hundred years ago, the book describes children whose imaginations are influenced by the classics and untouched by television. That amazed me the most. Cute story. "
