Six months after the dramatic conclusion of Moscow Rules, Gabriel has returned to the tan hills of Umbria to resume his honeymoon with his new wife, Chiara, and restore a seventeenth-century altarpiece for the Vatican. But his idyllic world is once again thrown into turmoil with shocking news from London. The defector and former Russian intelligence officer Grigori Bulganov, who saved Gabriel’s life in Moscow, has vanished without a trace. British intelligence is sure he was a double agent all along, but Gabriel knows better. He also knows he made a promise.
Do you know what we do with traitors, Gabriel? Many things have changed in Russia since the fall of Communism. But the punishment for betrayal remains the same.
Promise me one thing, Gabriel. Promise me I won’t end up in an unmarked grave.
In the days to come, Gabriel and his team of operatives will find themselves in a deadly duel of nerve and wits with one of the world’s most ruthless men: the murderous Russian oligarch and arms dealer Ivan Kharkov. It will take Gabriel from a quiet mews in London, to the shores of Lake Como, to the glittering streets of Geneva and Zurich, and, finally, to a heart-stopping climax in the snowbound birch forests of Russia. Faced with the prospect of losing the one thing he holds most dear, Gabriel will be tested in ways he never imagined possible. And his life will never be the same.

" Daniel Silva writes a certain genre. His protaganist is an Art restorer who, by the way, is an assassin for the Isreali secret service. He keeps trying to quit by his boss(Ari Sharon) keeps bringing him back under the guise of National security. This is a good read and the narration was very well done. "
— Chap, 2/10/2017" Another in the series about Gabriel Allon the super spy and artist... "
— Bonnie, 1/22/2014" Another very good Gabriel Allon book by Daniel Silva. It picked up where the previous one ended and moved forward at a relentless pace to a satisfying conclusion. After reading the entire series up to this point, the characters are like old friends. Much of the book takes place in Russia which provides a new and interesting setting for the series. I look forward to the next book in the series. "
— Terry, 1/19/2014" Read my full published book review here. "
— William, 1/18/2014" Gabriel is a great character. A bit bloodier in places than I expected. "
— Brian, 1/12/2014" The Defector is my introduction to this author's thrillers, and I will look for more of his books. It grabbed me on page 1 and was hard to put down, was well-written with characters I felt I got to know and understand. "
— Geni, 12/25/2013" Pretty good- of the Silva books I've read, I liked this and Moscow Rules the best. I think I particularly liked reading it before many of the other Gabriel Allon books because of different style of narration on Allon. "
— Shannon, 12/25/2013" It was so wonderful to continue reading the adventures of Gabriel Allon! "
— Dana, 12/21/2013" This was quite a good read, redolent of Le Carre at times. Involves complex story of defector recaptured by Russian oligarch, involving the protagonist's wife also being taken. Tense and dramatic "
— Martin, 12/21/2013" Tense, surprising little thriller that has kick started what I expect will be a heavy dose of spy thrillers throughout the coming fall. "
— Sam, 12/20/2013" This was easily the most action packed Gabriel Allon novel I've read so far. It left me on pins and needles. Also, I admire how Mr. Silva goes to some trouble to 'do his homework' before writing his books. "
— Livia, 9/12/2013" What a great book! I really loved it. I really appreciate all of these Gabriel Allon books. I never seem to be able to get them in the right order, and right now I am reading Moscow Rules. "
